Tuesday: The Dollyrots @ The Basement

All too often The Dollyrots have come to town as a headlining act – perfect for the couple dozen fans that continue to support the band with each pass through Columbus, but never really expanding their fanbase. For the first time that I can remember, The Dollyrots are pulling into Columbus with not a lot to lose but a ton to gain as they will be providing support for Bowling for Soup. Both bands are heavily endorsed by WNCI though I’m not quite sure that BFS’s fans have any idea who The Dollyrots are. That will change Tuesday night – I just hope The Dollyrots have brought along enough merch to satisfy the masses.

A few weeks ago, The Dollyrots premiered a brand new video for “Rollercoaster,” a mild departure from the trio’s typical POP-punk sound. Here it is.

The Dollyrots occupy the middle slot on the Patent Pending / Bowling for Soup bill on Tuesday night at The Basement. Doors open at 6pm with The Dollyrots hitting the stage around 8:45.

Friday in Columbus: The Dollyrots @ The Summit

The Dollyrots, who released my favorite CD of 2010 (“Sweet-and-sassy POP-punk-ROCK. “Rock Control!” was 2010’s “Volcano Girls” (Veruca Salt) minus the radio airplay and flashy MTV video.”) return to Columbus on Friday night. The L.A. trio will be playing at The Summit along with locals Ranger Danger and Charlie Hustle.

The band will also be stopping in at WNCI on Friday morning to chat with the morning crew.

Chip Midnight’s Favorite Albums of 2010

I have no interest in listening to anything by Kanye West. I’m probably missing the boat on The Black Keys. Surfer Blood, Sleigh Bells, Best Coast, The National, Arcade Fire all got cursory plays on the iPod but not enough to land them a spot on this list. I’d love to say that Superchunk made one of the most welcomed comebacks of 2010 but every time I hit the local indie record store, they were out of the CD and I never downloaded it from iTunes.

The following 10 albums (+15 honorable mentions + 10 local releases) were absorbed the most through my earbuds in 2010.

1. The Dollyrots, A Little Messed Up

Remember The Subways? No worries, Blood Red Shoes do post-Nirvana boy/girl bash-and-rock as well, if not better. Continue reading

The Dollyrots – A Little Messed Up

The Dollyrots will be at Skully’s on Monday, August 30 along with The Cliks and Hunter Valentine. Sure, it’s a Monday night, but the show starts at 8 and should be over before anybody turns into a pumpkin.

I hit up a campus-area CD store last week, the day A Little Messed Up was released. The CD store owner told me that his UPS shipment hadn’t come in for the day and he wasn’t sure whether or not this CD would be part of his shipment.

“So, you know their stuff. What section should I put it in?” he asked. I was stumped.

“Well, they’re from the LA punk scene, but, really, they have a pop-rock edge,” I said.

Put a million bucks in Kelly, Luis, and Chris’s bank accounts and you might confuse them for one of the manufactured Disney teen pop queens (Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, etc.) but this trio is the real deal. They just happen to write (their own) sugary sweet songs with spit-and-snarl in the vocals and guitar. It’s the kind of stuff that has huge potential crossover appeal – from fans of ’90s alt.rock female-fronted bands (ie – Veruca Salt, Letters to Cleo, The Muffs) to old punk legends (The Buzzcocks) to newer pop-rock radio bands (Bowling for Soup), there’s something for a large cross section of music lovers in The Dollyrots music.
