MP3: Panopticon

As mentioned here previously, Cleveland rock monsters This Moment In Black History recently released a new album entitled Public Square. I vaguely remember previous recordings being decent but lacking a certain something to keep me coming back. On the new album, however, I found more groove and variety than I expected. The frenzied, spastic, punky bursts of energy associated with their live show are still there, and they manage to fight through 13 songs in just over 32 minutes. However, within that time they also play some modern stoner rock, some darker “indie rock” that gives me some El Jesus vibes (see MP3 above), and they even toss in an old-school rap parody. The epic six-minute jam finale summarizes the proceedings quite well with a culmination of the multiple styles present on the record. The quartet fires on all cylinders throughout and lends the entire album an undercurrent of fiery soul. Maybe it’s time to dig out some of those older records.

Smog Veil Records has released Public Square on a pressing of 1000 records on marbled multi-colored wax (with MP3 download coupon), which you can pick up here or perhaps at a live show. Also available wherever fine MP3s are sold.

Speaking of live shows, the band will return to Columbus on Friday night at their current favorite local spot, Carabar. This show is part of another leg of their tour with fellow Clevelanders Sun God, but the show is also the 5th anniversary of the bar itself. So, more bands are surely taking part in the festivities, including a set from Blueprint with DJ support from Carabar Ron. This will be crazy and FREE, so who knows what might happen?

Cool lineup, eh? Blackoutfest returns for the 15th time to The Union in Athens, OH. Tickets at the door or at Haffa’s Records (15 W Union St, Athens) in advance — $10 per night, 3-day pass for $25. MIKE SHIFLET – really interesting stuff. loved the band. he mentioned in our interview with him that he’s hoping to do more shows with a band and i hope he follows up. it’s the making of something really cool.

MIRANDA SOUND – love the new stuff. i like when they play it a little heavier, something they don’t always do…. i think it adds a great extra layer to their music.

EL JESUS DE MAGICO – four years ago if you would have told me that i would have El Jesus play my 5 year party I would have laughed in your face. Things change, and I’m really happy that they did. Set was fucking FIERCE. can’t wait to hear their new album.

BRAINBOW/BLUEPRINT – I had intentionally stayed away from the rehersals because I wanted to experience the show for the first time with the crowd. And put it quite simply, I was stunned. Look, I love music, but this was seriously mind blowing. I felt something that I haven’t felt in a long time.

Instead of Brainbow trying to recreate the music of Blueprint, they approached it from their own point of view. It was Blueprint. It was Brainbow. Neither band sacrificed their integrity or created some sort of Frankenstein rock/rap thing that was only a novelty. I say this with all seriousness, it was epic! When Print said it was their last song, I was heartbroken! I could have used 5 more songs. I didn’t want it to end, and that’s a sign of a good set. Leave us wanting more….

I know it took a lot of time for Print and Brainbow to practice for this event, and I am really thankful that they did. It means so much that they took on this experiment for the 5 year anniversary of the site, and I can’t show my appreciation enough.

PS: Bob Ray Starker and Leslie Jankowski (from Church of the Red Museum) added a horn section in two of the songs. What a nice touch! Oh man. So good.

We did bill this as a one time only thing, and I hope they consider maybe doing it again in the future. Or maybe not. Maybe in this internet age when everything is recorded, Youtubed, and distributed to the world, it’s nice to have a “YOU HAD TO BE THERE” thing. I’d be happy either way.

This was the biggest crowd we’ve ever had for a single donewaiting.com event. It was great.

GRAVE BLANKETS – first time seeing them, won’t be my last. Really good sound. The recorded material they’ve put out there doesn’t do them justice…. they are a great live band.

SINKANE – Ahmed has always been one of my favorite musicians in Columbus and it looks like he’s finally firmed up his vision of Sinkane. Their set was hypnotic. Really cool. And with a solid indie label putting their album out later this year, things are gonna explode! Can’t wait! AHMED I WANT A PICTURE DISC RECORD.

THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY – haven’t seen them since they opened up for YEah Yeah Yeahs in Cleveland a few years back. Good set, liked the energy. First mosh pit ever at a donewaiting event.

There is a rumor that basically states in 1879 TMIBH drummer Bim had a funny conversation with OHIO’s version of Andre 3000, RJD2. Basically, supposedly RJ told Bim he was a hipster and he shouldn’t rap, and Bim was like I am black you white..

OR something like that.
Its prolly not true.

I could call RJ and ask, but then I would just have to type a preview that goes:

TMIBSA been doing it for awhile. Doods were in another famous band.
Steve Albini directed the play Afro-Punk. Loved the one album cover Mike Carney did.
New record sounds like the Germs. But really I only know 5 punk records so I could be wrong.

But back to writing on pure rumor, that rumour always makes me chuckle cause many times it seems like TMIBH hasn’t bought rap record since Public Enemies’ “She Got Game for Cheap” or whatever that Spike Lee movie about sex workering basketball players was called.

But it don’t really matter though cause This Moment is always amazing live. Anytime you peep them, shit is gonna be off the hook. One of the few bands, I always have fun seeing. Makes me want to start a Suicidal Tendancies based gang. They are playing a house party on 558 Sycamore and Parson next to CCAD. Columbus Ohio. Show is 5 bucks. Kegs and BYOB Also performing at this foam party are Muamin Collective, LMNTL, and Sounder.

Two of those bands are rappers, I am told.
So maybe the stuck on Public Enemy comment was dead wrong.
But hey I am dead nice.
I know what its like to be caught in the past when it comes to Hip Hop.

Nothing made me more happy then Cam’ron on CBS news talking about not talking to the police…
