MP3: Dead Girls Dance (Way Yes Remix)

Columbus world-beat-electro-pop duo Way Yes opens for Oberhofer and Cleveland’s Cloud Nothings Friday at the Basement. For a little taste of two of those bands, check out Way Yes’ remix of the Oberhofer song “Dead Girls Dance.” Trippy.

Adriana Mundy’s Favorite Albums of 2010

It is indeed that time of year. Well, yes, it is late December aka Christmas/New Years time. However, when most people are trimming trees, dusting off their John Denver and the Muppets Christmas albums and throwing back some egg nog, music addicts/geeks alike are perusing every “Best of 2010” list they can find on the world wide web. That being said…

Two-thousand and ten was quite a whirlwind year for me. I became part of this brilliant music blog, had a crash course in promoting shows and met some pretty special people along the way. It’s safe to say the music released this year all served as an applicable soundtrack as it felt like new albums came out faster than I could digest them.

If you’ve read most of my posts, it’s apparent that I enjoy reporting on international acts that I feel deserve American attention (and also since the rest of the Donewaiting staff do such a stellar job of keeping up on everything).

On top of national and international releases, Columbus’s scene has also kept quite busy this year. Without further ado, here’s my 2010 list:

1. Efterklang, Magic Chairs
Watch: Modern Drift

Reasons why Denmark rules: 1. Efterklang 2.Christiania 3. Legoland

2. Finders Keepers CompilationPomegranates
MP3:Zia: “Helelyos”

Who can resist some 60’s Persian Pop/Funk/Psych?

3. Cate Le Bon, Me Oh My
Watch: Shoeing the Bones

Honestly didn’t know much about Cate before interviewing her earlier this year, now I can’t stop listening to her. (Oh, and this video is really wonderfully weird.) Continue reading

Posters: This weekend in Columbus (+ mp3)

Fewer posters this week, so here’s an mp3 to make up for it. Don’t know why I slept on Way Yes previously. Good stuff.

MP3, Interview: Nick Tolford & Co.

MP3: End of the Night

Nick Tolford and Company are like Columbus’s version of The Commitments. A bunch of young, (mostly) white people bringing rockified soul music to the people. Except Tolford & Co. write their own tunes that rival stuff sung by mostly dead Motown guys. This Saturday at Carabar the band will release their much anticipated debut, Extraordinary Love. Tolford was kind enough to give me a little window into his world — a world of Ray Charles, The Misfits, Booker T, MF Gnar and “Bed Intruder.”

Back when you were playing in the Slide Machine, did you always have the idea for this band in the back of your head? Did you think you could pull it off?
I don’t know if I thought I could “pull it off,” but I always did solo stuff on the side of whatever band I was in at the time. I feel like the ball really got rolling once I got a band together and got more than just my input on the songs.

Were you surprised when friends and even strangers started rallying around you and even asking if they could join your band?
I was definitely surprised at the reaction I got from the demo songs. I wasn’t really expecting people to take notice at all.

Did you grow up listening to guys like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding?
My father always used to play old Motown and Stax stuff and I have always been most interested in vocal melody in songs. People like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, among many others, really know how it works. Soul isn’t all I listened to though. When I was 11 I heard the Misfits for the first time and that had a pretty huge influence on me. During my junior high and high school years, skateboarding and everything on Fat Wreck Chords carried me through.

Alix Reese Compilation Album

It’s been three weeks since our friend Alix Reese was tragically shot in the neck while driving on the east side. Multiple fundraisers have taken place and the support for them has been and continues to be incredible. In yet another selfless effort to raise money for medical expenses, Jacob Wooten has gathered the help of 20 local businesses and musicians to release a special limited-edition record for Alix.

The album features 15 different singles, including unreleased tracks by Phantods, Winter Makes Sailors and Wing and Tusk. Only 500 copies will be made, and 100% of the sales will be contributed to the Reese family to help pay for medical bills. The album will be released July 2nd at KOBO. Bands on the album will be performing all night. Albums will also be sold Saturday July 3rd at Skully’s Music Dinner, with Mr. Fahrenheit and The Loverboys with special guest Phantods.

Other contributors to this album include The Compressions, Karate Coyote, Saturday Giant, Sleepers Awake, Way Yes, New City Gypsy, Maza Blaska, Stretch Lefty, LES Crew, Ghost Shirt, Old Worlds and Two Cow Garage.
