Beloved Columbus ex-pat, Yeasayer’s Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane, leaked a song from his upcoming album Mars. It’s a spacey, paced, beautiful and majestic song.

Saratoga Springs-based electro-rockers Phantogram have been slowly building quite an impressive profile throughout the last year. Since their first headlining show at The Treehouse (RIP) in Columbus over a year and a half ago, they’ve toured with The Antlers, Metric, Beach House, Caribou, The xx, Zero 7, Yeasayer (the list goes on), appeared on Jimmy Fallon (where Questlove filled in on drums AND Jimmy called them “One of his favorite new bands”) and I’ve recently even heard them on the BBC’s indie radio station with Lauren Laverne.

They’ve contributed particularly to our Donewaiting family by being the first band to do a Donewaiting Live at Electraplay video, which you can see in its entirety here. Tonight they’ll play their fourth proper show in Columbus in promotion of their new EP, Nightlife, that will be released next month.

Joining the Outland Live bill tonight will be the eerily ethereal EXITMUSIC and Columbus natives Petit Mal. EXITMUSIC has been described as “dark, emotive, electronic music washed with icy guitars and husky yet angelic vocals”. Watch their creepy video for “The Sea” that’ll definitely get you in the mood for next week’s Halloween festivities here. Locals Petit Mal are emerging from the dying embers of Wing & Tusk (RIP) and are not to be missed. Doors open at 7pm with the first band on by 8.

Columbus ex-pat and sometimey DW blogger Ahmed Gallab aka Sinkane plays in Yeasayer. Before that he had stints with Caribou, Of Montreal and Born Ruffians.
He has made his hometown proud a zillion times over.

Having seen Yeasayer a couple of times before, I knew what to expect to a certain degree. The words I would use are similar to those which describe their sound: psychedelic, heart-thumping rock music that teeters on the brink of insanity. This mood they create in their live set has to be part of the reason they’re so well liked by other current mega-indie acts like MGMT and Vampire Weekend. It’s music that makes you dance, drink, take drugs (or feel like you have)… a real experience. A performance that makes my imagination wander is the real test to how remarkable a band is live. Makes it easy to see why their music videos always seem to have escaped from a third dimension.

Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of the performance was Ahmed Gallab’s (aka Sinkane) public allegiance to the city of Columbus. Not only did he step back on stage before the encore and talk about his time spent here, but he kicked off their last song by stating “This is all for Daymon Dodson.” People like Ahmed are why I love the Columbus music community.

Odd Blood has received acclaim from multiple reviewers across the US and UK since February and supplied the demand of fans globally, including appearances at prominent festivals like Coachella, Splendour in the Grass, Reading and Latitude. Last month they also released new single “Madder Red,” which features yet another typically strange Yeasayer video. Check it out above.

Opening the show will be Georgian-based Washed Out (stage alias of Ernest Greene), whose chillwave sound has been gaining exposure over the last year. The Newport Music Hall will open its doors at 7pm.
