MP3: Street Clothes

Los Angeles’ Fool’s Gold recently released Leave No Trace, the follow-up to their 2009 self-titled debut album. Their lineup (which still includes Columbus ex-pat and multi-instrumentalist Brad Caulkins) and sound have changed a bit since the first album and previous tours, and the new album reveals a band that is focused on what it wants to be.

Leave No Trace features 10 new songs that delve into a wide range of styles and textures. While their collection of international influences are still easy to hear, the new material also touches on 1980s British pop (the opening of the title track is a near dead-ringer for a Smiths song) and dance music. Another stylistic shift is that lead singer Luke Top sings in English for the majority of the album, as opposed to the debut album that was sung in Hebrew. The result of these changes is that the songs have a more grounded, personal sound, which also plays out in Top’s lyrics. Songs like “The Dive” and “Narrow Sun” mix Top’s yearning spirit with catchy hooks, while the synth-laden “Street Clothes” seeks to inspire while evolving into a dirty jam led by Caulkins’ saxophone. The now five-man outfit has created a batch of songs here that convey passionate personal emotions while remaining primarily joyous and buoyant, led by Top’s soaring vocals.

Fool’s Gold is currently on the road in support of Leave No Trace, and the tour includes a stop Monday night at Skullys. Opening are locals Maza Blaska and You’re So Bossy. Admission is $10 at the door.

James “Jimi” Payne

For the past three years I have lived in the Monster House, a DIY punk house in Columbus, Ohio. I co-founded the Monster House with Pat Crann, Austin Eilbeck, Ryan Eilbeck, Jeff Love, Kristina Markey, Matt O’Conke, Joe Scarbro, Dylan Taylor-Lehman, and Nick Wong. A few weeks ago the last three original roommates – besides me – left. And, as of this week, I’m moving out as well. A group of our friends still living at the Monster plan to continue hosting shows and events. On October 8th, Apache Dropout, Landlord, Reverse The Curse, and Cody Troyan are performing there.

After “the jump” is a list of every performer who occasioned the “stage” at the Monster House in the last three years. 400 different performers have played over 150 shows booked by over 20 promoters. The list is representative of the Columbus punk scene as well as the national DIY touring circuit from 2007-10.

More than 30 people paid rent at the house during this time span.

Tonight at the Summit, ex-Columbusite Brad Caulkins (The Sun, Jive Turkeys, etc.) brings his sax back to town as a member of Fool’s Gold, a Los Angeles Afropop-inspired collective. The band’s self-titled debut is eight tracks of meditative and mostly joyous tunes led by the vocals of Luke Top, who sings predominantly in Hebrew. This unique combination provides for a sound that is much more reverent and humble than other current bands of their ilk. They share the stage with Brooklyn’s Tony Castles and locals You’re So Bossy, led by Sam Brown, Caulkins’ ex-bandmate in The Sun.

MP3: Bush League All-Stars – Gravity’s Heart

After more than a decade since emerging from the ashes of Greenhorn, and 8 months since solidifying the current version of membership, Dan Spurgeon leads the Bush League All-Stars in debuting Cedar Knees this Friday. Reflecting the deep resumes of the members, all of whom have had success around town in the gamut of genres, the record varies from sweet to stomping (but tends towards the latter).

Most songs seem to fall somewhere in the spectrum between the smart piano alehouse-pop of the Hold Steady and a more visceral American camaro-rock. If you’re looking for deep sentiment or brooding, look away. I’m left mostly with the impression that the songs are as fun to play as they are to listen to. It’s got the vigor of a summertime record, almost a shame to dump it on the market when people are hunkering down under their comforters to watch crappy DVDs. Don’t let the weather stop ya though. The release show is Friday, December 11th at The Summit. Hand-screened CDs make great stocking stuffers.

And speaking of great bands that have built up a little cred over the years, joining BLAS for the night are big shots Pretty Mighty Mighty and You’re So Bossy. Whoa. Really. This is gonna be good.

The Flaming Lips@LC

Oh hey, remember this thingie? I know, it’s been a minute. Don’t wanna hear it. I bet you can only imagine that a ton of cool shit has happened since we last got up. For example, a weekend camping excursion with a bunch of dudes, guns and fireworks(in the streets) O.K. enough will the small talk. Oh man where do I even start, the older I get the less I remember.

In this issue of “How long is Robert Duffy gonna keep letting that jackass write this crap”, I saw some sicccckkkk psych rock via Subarachnoid Space, some weirdo noise band in luchador masks, some weirdo dude in a giant hamster ball, some weirdo dude hula hooping for a really long time and I went to that thingie down town that a bunch of bands played at.

If you’re really that bored at work today click the more thingie —–>

Dead Sea@Carabar

Tuesday, against my better judgment I went down to Carabar basically because I haven’t seen Dead Sea in sometime, so I figured why not. Gotta tell you-pleasantly surprised by all bands involved. First and foremost, DEAD MOTHERFUCKING SEA. If you’re not hip, Dead Sea are prog metal virtuosos. They typically play loooong and play last. Tuesday the played short, first and left the decent crowd for a Tuesday night wanting more, which is the way it should be. These dudes are amazing musicians, excellent showmen and all around cool dudes. Currently, Dead Sea are in the midst of recording a two song 12″ (one song each side doi) to be released on bass player Alex’s Label, Chrome Leaf. Also I may or may not have heard that Alex is playing bass for some dude that was in some “influential post rock band”‘s other band. Go see Dead Sea on October 30 at Ruby Tuesday dorks.

OvO@Carabar

OvO are some noise duo from Italy. The chick played her dread with a bow.

uhhhh

I mean these dudes were wearing luchador masks. Chris Lutzko was stoked.

Subarachnoid Space@Carabar

I used to have a Subarachnoid Space at one point in time-dunno how I got it,dunno where it went, prolly sold it for heroin. At any rate, wasn’t sure what exactly what to expect and what I got was pure psych rock awesomeness. Dudes(and one chick) were dressed in all white to like totally become one with the screen behind them and the projections in front of them. So totally arty. For real though, sick psych, if not almost stoner jams. Sorry bout you’re life if you missed it.

Guinea Worms@Rumba Cafe

It was Rumba Cafe for me on Thursday. There’s this weirdo band Guinea Worms, perhaps you’ve heard of them. If not sorry bout you’re life. On this live Guinea Worms experience occasion, it was all about the ode to Kraftwerk, Kraftworms if you will-at least that’s what Gary called it. Whatever just look at the picture-I mean.

Also Day Creeper and We March played too. People seem to like Day Creeper. I think they at least aren’t awful. We March are from that hippie college town Athens, but aren’t a jam band and were loud.

The Flaming Lips@LC

Thanks to acclaimed Donewaiting writer Chip Midnight, I was able to attend The Flaming Lips show on Friday night at The Lifestyles(not the rubber) Community Pavilion. I should mention that my first concert consisted of the bands The Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers and Stone Temple Pilots. It was the summer before my freshman year of high school. I was totally stoked for Stone Temple. I crowd surfed for the first and last time. I met Gibby Haynes and got his autograph. I saw a dugout for the first time in my life. Pretty good first concert really.

17 years later The Flaming Lips headline and a whole bunch of people(buncha hippies really) come to see them. So yeah, I haven’t seen Lips since the first time and was curious to see what the hubbub was about these days. Gotta say, they pretty much delivered. I’m not really a deep cuts Lips dude, so I was happy to hear all the songs you would expect to hear. It was quite the production and I thought the confetti and balloons were cool-I mean as far as that kind of thing goes. Also, Wayne Coyne dedicated a song to The Sun drummer(buncha other bands too) turned You’re so Bossy front man Sam Brown. Buncha weirdos dressed up. There was an 11 year old standing in front of me. The Lips entered the stage through a psychedelic vagina. I told the kid that’s what acid felt like-it wasn’t very well received by his mother. Good lookin’ out Chip and Flaming Lips touring guitarist Derek Brown!

Aaron Hibbs hoopin@Skylab

Soooo, Aaron Hibbs of noise dudes Sword Heaven attempted to break the world record for longest hula hooping ever-dude was shooting for 120 hours. The official record is 72 hours with no break. There is a rumored 90 hour record. Aaron made it round about 59 hours and made an oopsie. I mean, he had a catheter-dude means business and is gonna try again sans oopsie. Come to the benefit on October 9 at Skylab. Envelope is performing. Help make these hoop dreams a reality. MORE LIKE AARON HIPPS AMIRITE.

Saturday there was a festival downtown. Independents’ Day. Buncha local vendors. Buncha local bands. Buncha pictures of the bands that played follow.

Pictured: impromptu Unholy Two

I took some [Expletive] pictures as well.

This week I saw some stand up at The Surly Girl Saloon and saw a few bands as well-specifically an impromptu Unholy Two set, ipps, You’re So Bossy, Dead Set Ready(twice),who happened to be playing right next door to The Death Set, Bosniacs, The Brown Notes who happened to be playing with a band called Downtown Brown and a whole bunch more. Check me out right here yo —

Wednesday I went to The Surly Girl Saloon for a very important business meeting and it just so happened to be open mic stand up, hosted by Sean Sommerville and quite honestly I was pleasantly surprised. I literally lol’d, though I didn’t stay all night….I’ve been there on at least one other occasion and it really is hit or miss….luckily what I caught were the hits.

On Thursday night(3.26.09)….I went to Circus to check out Dead Set Ready, The Brown Notes and some band from Detroit Downtown Brown. I asked one of the Downtown Brown dudes how he would describe their music and he said “butt funk”. MAYBE AFTER I WRITE A FEW MORE ARTICLES I WILL BE ABLE TO WRITE MORE ADJECTIVES ABOUT THEM. What I mean is that they didn’t impress me, but I’m a Mindless Self Indulgence fan so what do I know.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH-Dead Set Ready are a band to watch and are fun as fuck. They basically play mid 90′s warped tour punk rock and I mean that in the best way possible. It really is some super fun punk rock. Seriously. I saw them twice this weekend.

Pictured: Dead Set Ready@Circus

The Brown Notes are one of the few bands that play regularly that I’ve been yet to catch-TONIGHT WAS THAT NIGHT. The name has turned me off, not gonna lie, I figure [Expletive] band name, [Expletive] band. As it turns out that was not the case…What I’m saying is these dudes aren’t as jammy as I thought they’d be and are a super tight groove laden straight up rock band.

After the show at Circus I somehow ended up at Skully’s. I ran into the man,the myth, the legend, Zachery Allan Starkey and I’m pretty sure he told me he reads my column. On my way home from ladies 80′s these girls leaving Surly had beer to go. It was in a plastic bag. One of them set the beer down to put on her coat. This happened as I was walking by and I picked up the bag and kept walking…I gave it back and they gave me a 24 oz. PBR that I didn’t finish. OH WHAT A NIGHT

I was summoned to Surly on Friday by The Boss Man to check out the newest Sunken Treasure Records signee Bird and Flower and discuss my salary-I meant to get photographic proof that Robert Duffy is in fact a real dude and does go out to shows. Then I dropped my camera and it quit working. Then he asked me to leave because I was talking too loud and he didn’t want me to ruin
Bird and Flower’s set. Then he made co worker Ben C take me to the Bourbon Street/Summit Complex in the Donewaitng Hummer to go watch other bands to type stuff about. On the way there I fixed my camera so it started working again.

I had message board post conversations IRL on Friday night at Bourbon St. My life is so weird sometimes(all the time). I bounced back and forth between Bourbon Street and The Summit thanks to Benco who was presenting the show at The Summit-New More Switch Blades Tour, FEATURING THE DEATH SET, TEAM ROBESPIERRE, NINJASONIK, TOTALLY MICHAEL and CEREBRAL BALLZY (i copied and pasted that). Basically these dudes are from Brooklyn and they are cool.

Pictured: MORE LIKE THE SUCK SET

The good bands were at Bourbon St.

First was Miss Lara Yazvak of Tough and Lovely/Ill Fits fame-All i can say is if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Lara perform you are missing out-BIGTME

Pictured: LARA LARA LARA

Next were Bosniacs. They apparently don’t have a myspace page. Why they didn’t call themselves The Evil Means is beyond me.

Pictured: Bosniacs

Next up were Dead Set Ready-Like I said-saw them twice, band to watch, super fun punk rock

The Main Street Gospel closed out the evening-In case you didn’t know, Main Street Gospel have a new 7″ recorded by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys fame and Barry Main Street Gospel was kind enough to give me a copy. I just don’t have a turntable-BOTTOM LINE-MAIN STREET GOSPEL GOOD PSYCH ROCK YOU GO SEE THEM

Pictured: The Main Street Gospel

HOLY SHIT SATURDAY NIGHT WAS GOOD DRUMMER NIGHT AT CARABAR

Jordan Martin, Fern, You’re So Bossy, ipps and an “impromptu” Unholy Two set(2 songs).

This was one of the best nights of Columbus music that I have seen in quite some time. I missed Jordan Martin, but I do imagine the opportunity will present itself in due time-from what I gather this young lady deserves a write up of her own and you will hear the name again in the near future.

Next was Jeff Fernagle of Tree of Snakes fame/infamy. I don’t know if it was because I was drunker than Jeff or that Jeff was drunker than me or that both of us were less drunk than we were at any Tree of Snakes show but homeboy is hilarious-he types stuff sometimes too

You’re So Bossy just might be the best kept secret in town….in case you didn’t know, YSB is Sam Brown(The Sun, Gaunt, New Bomb Turks), Phillip Park(Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Haynes Boys, Anna Ranger) and Jovan Karcic(Gaunt, Haynes Boys). Jovan is an amazing drummer. It was good drummer night in case you missed it. Go see You’re So Bossy@The Treehouse on 4.17.09 and Anna Ranger on 4.10.09 at the same joint.(this is what i gathered from my chicken scratches-don’t quote me).

Soooo….ipps. Bo, Emily and Mat(sometimes) from Necropolis and Mike from El Jesus De Magico ……POOR MANS PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART. For real though, nothing like Necropolis or El Jesus-best non-CDR CDR band

After ipps were done Chri$ Lutzko Unholy Two asked bartender Cara if him and Bo could play 2 songs She said sure.

She thought he meant on the jukebox.

That isn’t what he meant
