2012 SXSW Recap: Real Rap Vacation

Tired as fuck, I walked out of the “Killer Mike R.A.P. Music Showcase” Wednesday. After getting outside, I wondered why DJ Detox was bullshitting and not outside.  I walked back inside and he was making small talk with the GZA.

When I found the GZA and Detox, a small crowd had also found the GZA.

Footnote to Donewaiting’s 9th Anniversary: P.Blackk & DJ Bruni (above) almost had to cancel their performance because someone ran a stop sign when Blackk was headed back the venue.  Zero Star (below) performed with a 102 degree fever and a tension headache.  One person on twitter described the evening like this “@wesflexner  if @Zerostar82 was Jordan with the flu, last night was @PBlackk‘s Willis Reed moment @aceofcupsbar

Under the picture of P.Blackk is a DJ Detox’s Donewaiting’s 9th Anniversary Hip Hop MIX.  It has music by P. Blackk and Zero Star mixed in with Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Talib Kweli, Jay Electronica, Mos Def & more. For Tracklist visit DJ Detox’s Soundcloud page.

Zero Star Pays Homage to Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartment’s Ron House

YouTube Preview Image

Ron House is obviously a fixture in Columbus rock music.  Columbus emcee Zero Star is also impressed by Ron House’s swag. (did the phrase Ron House’s Swag make you throw up in your mouth? sorry)

Anyway, I am waiting for you tube to make an interview I did with Zero Star and DJ Pos to exist. So I figured I would share this since TOP told you to look at our site today,

Zero Star is playing Donewaiting’s 9th Anniversary along with a band Ron House is in, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments doing “Bait & Switch”  along with Bill Fox, P. Blackk & DJ Bruni, Sundown, and DJ Detox tomorrow Feb 3rd at Ace of Cups.

Zero Star somehow manages to make himself a real-life animated gif of an alien in the above low-budget freestyle video that the Columbus emcee aptly named  Space Rap 2.0.

Zero Star will be performing at Donewaiting’s 9-Year Anniversary, February 3rd at Ace of Cups.  TJSA, P.Blackk, Bill Fox, DJ Detox and Sundown are also on the bill.

MP3: Zero Star – “Maybe I’m Joking. Maybe I’m Not”

Zero Star is playing Donewaiting’s 9 Year Anniversary on February 3rd at Ace of Cups.

Tonight,  Zero is releasing the physical copies for his new album Maybe I’m Joking,Maybe I’m Not at his Buggin Out 3 Party at the Carabar.

Respected Hip Hop blog Kevin Nottingham presented Zero’s new album earlier this week.

I reviewed Maybe I’m Joking in  the Other Paper.  I obviously liked it ’cause, “Zero’s flow is complex and refined, and his content is reflective, funny and wise in a subtle way. In this and other cuts, Chozin beats have the right amount of jazz, boom-bap and experimental elements to keep things harmonic with all those bars flying around.”

Donewaiting’s 9-year Anniversary show: Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Bill Fox, P.Blackk, Zero Star, Sundown, Detox

This here weblog has been around for almost a decade, and that’s reason to celebrate. We’ll do that by bringing three amazing bands, an emcee and a deejay to Ace of Cups on Feb. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Needless to say, you should come celebrate with us:

Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments are not just reuniting for this show. Ron House, Bob Petric and crew are playing their seminal 1995 Onion/American record Bait & Switch front to back. Rick Rubin would be proud. Wes Flexner also informed me that TJSA was once featured in Egotrip magazine, one of the greatest hip hop magazines of all time, which is fitting, considering our next artist…

Zero Star, via Wes – “Zero Star has proven to be one of the coldest rappers in Columbus by making classics with the late DJ Przm, the venerable Blueprint and upstarts like J. Maggz and Chozin, as well as dolo appearances on Grindtime and 107.5’s ‘In The Booth.'”

Bill Fox: We talk about Bill Fox almost as much as the Black Keys on this blog. The Cleveland troubadour who used to helm The Mice has become one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and by the time Feb. 3 rolls around, he’ll have a new album to play behind. But really, even without a new album, any Bill Fox show is a big deal and rare treat.

Sundown: It was probably only a matter of time before TK Webb put together a band here in Columbus after moving from Brooklyn (Kansas City before that). He chose the right partners: Dustin White (Moons), Blake Pfister (Moon High) and Grant Driskell (TV Eye). Don’t sleep on the band’s debut cassette EP, Mansion Burning, and keep your ear out for more stuff the band is currently recording.

DJ Detox: If you’ve been coming to this site for any period of time, or you even occasionally attend shows, you know Detox. He’s one of the most in-demand deejays in the city. He’ll spin tunes between sets.

Feel free to RSVP on Facebook.

UPDATE: P.Blackk added to the show!

Video: ZeroStar feat Maggz “Bonus Track”

In last week’s the Other Paper, I wrote about an emcee battle that Zero Star brought here. Well,  above is a video provided by HU.Media that contains no battling.

But you will see rappers, a Homage t-shirt and Carabar.

If you like this song, then head over to Zero Star’s Bandcamp and check out Don’t Look Now. It’s the ep that this bonus track is on.
