Music Lists Are Rarely Good

A very large discussion broke out in our message board over a lame Rolling Stone “All Time Best Albums” list that was recently published. As a general rule, I find all of these lists to be worthless. I mean, come on now. Trying to figure out the best bands, albums or whatever of all time or “right now” is just silly. I can understand picking the best records of a year, but these all time/current lists are for crap.

To prove my point, a bunch of music bloggers/writers put together their own list and I’d say it’s just as bad as the Rolling Stone one and the Guardian list that came out awhile back.

As long as we have numbers, we’ll have these lists, I’m afraid.

The Return of Swizzle-Stick

You may know Chip Midnight as the writer of the donewaiting.com Atomic Ned. Or maybe you know him as a writer for Columbus Alive. Before all that, though, he was known as the man behind Swizzle-Stick, one of the first music review sites on the web.

For the past year Swizz has been pretty quiet. Staff changes, problems with the server, that sort of thing. Good news, though. Swizzle-Stick is back! So please, make with the clicky and show Swizzle-Stick your love.

  • Chip is looking for feedback from people like you in the message board.
  • MP3 Stereo

This product lets you wirelessly stream MP3s from your computer to your stereo. WiFi HiFi.

    Indie Rock Band Scams

    Yet another scoop from Tallgirl:

    hey guys-
i got this in an email from David Hooper (Kathode Ray Music/2NMC conference)…

It’s a link to a website that talks about alot of different scams out there trying to feed off the vulnerability & deep pockets (and we know how truly deep they are) of independent musicians…

check it out and try to help yourself not get ripped off… http://www.geocities.com/songshark/

    MP3 Ha Ha

Send your MP3s back to the RIAA with this website. Heh.

    Wishes

Now that there’s some time between it, can’t we all agree that “Hail to the Thief” by Radiohead mostly sucked?

    Microsoft Plans Online Music Store

Here’s the story. Seriously, I think the only site on the internet that isn’t offering a music store these days is The Sports Frog.

    Happy Birthday, Jeff Buckley

From the official website of his estate:

“Jeff Buckley Music presents special events scheduled to take place online in celebration of Jeff’s birthday on November 17th, 2003. Join us and log on to the official website located at www.jeffbuckley.com where you’ll find a streaming RealMedia presentation of the Documentary “Fall in Light”. Also, we present the full twenty “Live at Sin-e'” banter outtakes, in their entirety.”

Given all the Buckley music that was released after his death, I’d imagine he is good friends with Tupac in heaven.

Oh Britney, When Did It All Go Wrong?

Last night at the American Music Awards…

  • Britney tells BBC that she is a role model.
  • Discuss Britney’s new album here.
  • Highlight Reel: Last Week on donewaiting.com

Here’s a round-up of some of the best stories, features, and message board activity that you might have missed last week on the site.

  • Merchandise price guide for bands on the road. What to charge your fans. A donewaiting.com public service announcement.
  • Chip Midnight interviews Rockit Girl and gets to the bottom of a lot of issues.
  • 10 Questions for the Damnwells by David Cobb.
  • Battle of the Bands seem to be a necessary evil, but this Columbus OH battle has a lot of weird, weird rules about how to earn points.
  • Tiara Photo Gallery
  • Greg Dulli’s homecoming concert with the Twilight Singers was earlier this week and here’s the review. ALSO: Twilight Singers in Chicago Review and our Twilight Discussion rages on in the message board.

Also, we’re shelving Signal to Noise until early next year. Our writers had some other things going on in their lives they had to attend to, and we’d rather put it on hold than have it be stale.
