Rockit Girl Interview

In preparation of Saturday’s donewaiting.com concert in Columbus, Chip Midnight interviewed Rockit Girl, one of the bands playing that night. Here’s a small introduction:

Time passed and Rockit Girl seemed to go through a few personnel changes. Then, it was announced that Gina had put Rockit Girl on hold and was joining Veruca Salt following the departure of Suzanne Sokol. Gina became roommates with Louise and the two moved from Chicago to L.A. to breathe some life into Veruca Salt. While there, Louise hooked up with Courtney Love to start a project called Bastard. Gina joined the project soon thereafter but her (and Louise?s) time was shortlived. 10 days of writing and recording with no final results. Love decided to dump Louise and Gina and brought in other musicians who she felt ?fit the image better?.

Undeterred, Louise and Gina got back to work on writing new Veruca Salt material. I?ve had the honor of hearing some of the stuff that was recorded during that time (some of the songs appeared on an EP that Louise put out this past summer) and the songs were among the best that Veruca Salt has ever put out. Unfortunately, things weren?t moving along as quickly as Gina had hoped and she decided to leave the band and return to Chicago to start Rockit Girl back up. (full interview)

This is one of the best interviews we’ve had on the site, so please, give it a click.

What’s Your Worst Memory of Playing With Yo La Tengo?

A lot of bands weigh in with funny stories.

Chuck Cleaver, Ass Ponys
Our second or third ever show as the Ass Ponys was opening up for Yo La Tengo, at this place called the High Top in Newport, Kentucky. I think the German guy was playing bass for them at that point. Or was it Wolf? And they also had some roadie or something on tour with them who they hated him. Anyway, about two hours before we went on our drummer, Dan, called us at the club to tell us he couldn’t make it. We went ahead and played the show as a drummer-less trio and were terrible, so awful that at one point Georgia actually asked the guy who booked the place if we were a “real band.” (more here)

Now might be a good time to direct you once again to the donewaiting.com Yo La Tengo Photo Gallery.

This is an excellent use of the Creative Commons License. Berklee College of Music has posted up a bunch of free lessons so you can learn how to play a whole bunch of instruments, from the guitar to beat matching for DJs. Really cool. There’s also information about the music industry. Check out all the lessons here.

donewaiting/Chicago: Twilight Singers Concert Review

Tankboy gassed up the Tankboy Tank and drove it to see the Twilight Singers last night and here’s the review. Sounds like a great show.

  • While we’re feeling the Tankboy love, it should be also noted to the internet that he reviewed the new Pink album today, too. Two Tankboy posts a day keep the doctor away, yo.
  • donewaiting/interview: The Damnwells

Several of the donewaiting.com writers are big Damnwells fans. This is a band that I don’t know much about, but luckily we have a nicey interview with the band by David Cobb.

Blur Singer to Release Vinyl-Only Solo Album

From Mali Music to Gorillaz, I am a Damon Albarn mark. This makes me actually want to get a record player.

“Democrazy” will include raw demos and song fragments recorded by Albarn in hotel rooms while touring in the US earlier this year. Released on 24 November on Albarn’s Honest Jon’s record label, only 5,000 copies will be made. (full story)

    New York Times Interviews R.E.M.

An actual informative interview with the band.

Belle and Sebastian in Columbus OH

Belle and Sebastian played in Columbus last night and the show was great. A full review will come this weekend, along with lots of photos. Somehow I ended up with seats in the front row. Which means good photos.

In the meantime, discussion of the show is going on here. There is a lot of hating going on towards the opening band, Rasputina. Yikes!
