donewaiting/England: Danielson Familie Live Review

Steve Miller lives, and hits us with a review of a Danielson Famile review.

Where's that rocket ship?!

While beating out The Eagles and Rod Stewart is as big an accomplishment as, say, tying your shoes all by yourself it’s still pretty sick that they lost to Rick Astley’s mutant clone. The fact that this clone’s sales slid by over 60% from the previous week only proves we are one step closer to armegeddon.

Hallowoof

Woof You Very Much

Sure, you can dress your dog up like Elvis this Halloween, but it’d be funnier if you give your pup a spliff and have him go as Snoop Doggy Dogg. (I cant believe I give out these awesome suggestions for free)

Welcome Back, Napster

The legal version of Napster is back and you can check it out here.

It’s kind of funny to see a program hated by so many industry people cleaned up and put back into the real world. Sort of like how they cleaned up Alex in “A Clockwork Orange.” But we all know how that ended up.

Elliott Smith Tribute Show, Beck Reflects on Smith

I hope they record it.

Beck will be playing the Elliott Smith Memorial show on November 3rd at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. Other artists signed on include Grandaddy, Radar Bros, Rilo Kiley, Beth Orton, Bright Eyes, Future Pigeon, and special guests. All artists will be doing short sets, covering Elliott’s tunes. The excellent short film about Elliott, “Strange Parallel” directed by Steve Hanft, will also be screened. Tickets are onsale now through Ticketweb, with all proceeds going to the Elliott Smith Foundation for Abused Children.

Beck also offers up these words about Elliott:

I heard the news this morning that Elliott Smith had passed away. It is a terrible loss for myself and many of my friends, who knew, worked and hung out with him. Needless to say he was one of the best songwriters of our day and a formidable musician. He was also soft spoken, intelligent and extremely humble. He had an acute sense of justice. At one of my shows last year he tried to intervene with security who were harrassing a kid, and was in turn beaten and arrested by them. We know he’s had his struggles over the years and I was heartened by word that he was on an upswing and preparing a new album. We even talked a few times about getting together and making some music when I got off tour. Nobody was to know what would happen, but I am grateful for the times we got to tour and hang out together. He will be missed and the ramifications of his absence will long be felt. — Beck

Getting to Know Silo the Huskie

Here’s the long and short of it.

Silo the Huskie made some waves in the indie music world in the 2000-01 timeframe. After paying their dues in Columbus OH, they were signed to San Diego’s Cargo Records (home of Blink-182, of all people). The band ended up on a bunch of tours, which also routed them through big deals like SXSW.

But then things between them and the label went sour. As Silo bandmember Brian Barlup said in a recent interview about the experience with the label:

?All-in-all it was a pretty positive experience,? says Barlup. ?It made us get off our asses and tour and write. When we were dropped we thought they were dicks. Then we realized, ?They?re not cock bags, they?re just broke.?? (full interview)

It doesn’t get much more honest than that, does it?

After taking a few years off to figure out what the fuck to do with themselves, Silo are back with a new album, “Sons of Columbus,” that is sure to be one of my favorite records from Columbus this year. The album opens with the working man’s anthem, “When to Run,” and doesn’t stop until the last chord of the last song. It’s a great record.

Luckily, Silo’s new label has four MP3s from the album that can be downloaded here. Included in the batch is the aforementioned “When to Run”.

Welcome back, Silo.
