Stephen King Discusses Geezer Buying Habits

This is from Stephen King’s column he writes in Entertainment Weekly.

So what happened in the ’90s? I think we’re seeing an entire generation — my generation, the baby-boom generation — turning off the lights upstairs and putting a sign on the door: SORRY, BUT I’M TAKING A NAP. MIND CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. Pretty much the same deal is going on with music sales. Piracy and illegal downloads, although covered to a fare-thee-well in the press, account for only a fraction of the drop in $$. I think what’s happening is all too clear: We baby boomers are just too pooped to party. Oh, we do buy some records — you may have heard that we love the Beatles, Rod Stewart, and those funksters the Rolling Stones. Just don’t try to get us to listen to anyone who isn’t registered with AARP! Bob Seger was probably correct when he told us rock & roll never forgets, but it sure gets tired.

Nostalgia will be the death of us all.

donewaiting/England: Live Mew Review (w/ Photos)

It must be the holiday season because dw/England writer Steve Miller has given us two great live reviews in one week. This time out he reviews Mew, a band I’ve never heard anything about. But let me tell you, after reading Steven’s column I want to own everything from this band. Here’s a highlight of the live review:

At ULU, Mew are treated as if they are returning kings. They?re a football team on a lap of honour, a Hollywood star at a celebrity wedding. The jittery shuddering power-pop of “Am I Wry? No” is received with rapture and it builds from there. Halfway through the set, the crowd applause has become replaced by a crowd roar. Jonas speaks in between a couple of songs but I can?t hear a word that he says. The band look so young, so pretty; if I was fifteen years younger I?d worship them with all the conviction the teenage me could muster. (full review)

    Site Notes

    Two things:

  • November was the biggest month donewaiting.com has ever had. We’ve had a steady increase month by month, but last month was huge. Lots of trees had to be cut in rainforests to produce the bandwidth that we poured out to ISPs all over the world. Thanks dudes.
  • February 2004 is the proper one year anniverary of the site. If things work out, we’ll be announcing about six different concerts being held that month (throughout three different states). A few big names are connected to these shows, so get your excitement hat on.
  • Help Me Out

Seriously, is it time for me to finally buy an iPod?
