Jay Farrar disbanded Son Volt in 1998 and went the solo route. In October, Farrar recruited Brad Rice (guitar–Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams), Andrew Duplantis (bass?Jon Dee Graham, Meat Puppets, Bob Mould), Eric Heywood (pedal steel?Son Volt, Calexico) and Dave Bryson (drums?Canyon) to join Son Volt. A new studio album is due in mid-2005. Son Volt performs at the Mound City Music Fest in St.Louis on December 11. Their next scheduled date? You guessed it … SXSW. More details to follow (Jay Farrar’s site lists the show date as March 13 but that is not within the dates that SXSW is taking place).
Andrew Duplantis is one amazing bassist. This little piece, great as it is, neglected to mention that he also plays bass with Austin extreme-instrumentalists Tia Carrera, Dismukes, Richard Buckner, as well as the legendary Alejandro Escovedo. Plus, Andrew just released his solo debut (under his own name – it’s called “Only Funny The First Time”) just in time for Christmas.
Looking forward to seeing him with Son Volt.
