The original Duran Duran lineup split up in the mid-80s, when most of the members were only in their mid-20s. The subsequent years saw Duran Duran continue but with a revolving door of new members. Setting all bad feelings aside (or at least not bringing them up every time they were in a room together), the original members of Duran Duran — Simon LeBon (vocals), Andy Taylor (guitars), Nick Rhodes (keyboards), John Taylor (bass) and Roger Taylor (drums) — reunited last year and wrote an album of entirely new Duran Duran material. Astronaut will be released a week from today. The new stuff can be described as “new wave disco music” which, in my opinion, isn’t a terrible thing. The International Herald Tribune ran a feature story on the band today that documents the reformation of one of the greatest video bands ever. If the reformed Pixies can fit Columbus into their tour schedule, there is no reason why we shouldn’t expect to see Duran Duran here sometime in the next couple of months.

Microsoft’s Ballmer Talks About the Evils of iPods
People are so silly.
Billing Microsoft as the good guys and Apple the villains of the piece – at least as far as corporate America, rather than users, is concerned, Ballmer said: “We?ve had DRM in Windows for years. The most common format of music on an iPod is ‘stolen’.” (full story)
If you can’t laugh, cry.

Donewaiting/Los Angeles: Pixies Live Review
Han offers up a review of a recent Los Angeles Pixies show he attended:
I wasn’t that excited about the Pixies reunion. I’m probably a medium sized Pixies fan, owning all their records but not lovingly caressing them on a daily basis. There was just something about the way the tour was put together and announced that never made it seem an essential experience. It was a cash-in reunion for a nostalgic audience wanting one more chance and a small percentage of new hipster fans weaned on the Pixies’ descendants looking for their first time. I’m inbetween, old enough to be familiar but never seeing them live the first time ’round. Given that, I figured one shot would be worth it, even if it was the Pixies in their Fat Elvis mode. (full review)
I see the Pixies tomorrow.

Vote for Change Tour Underway
I’m heading up to Cleveland tonight for the Springsteen/REM/Bright Eyes Vote for Change tour. I can’t wait. I saw Springsteen and company a few years back in NJ at Continental Airlines Arena. It was the first show he played with the E Street Band after his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction. It was an amazing night, and I’m thinking tonight’s gonna be great too.
Details from the first show on the tour in Philadelphia:
Bruce and the E Street Band kicked off their contribution to the Vote For Change tour with a blistering two-hour performance last night at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia. First Bruce joined Michael Stipe and REM for a duet on “Man on the Moon”. After REM’s set Nils Lofgren came on stage and played a Jimi Hendrix style “Star Spangled Banner” before the whole E Street Band and Bruce entered and kicked into “Born in the USA”. “Badlands”, “No Surrender”, “Lost in the Flood”, full-band “Youngstown” and many other classics followed. John Fogerty joined Bruce for three of his own songs plus a duet on “The Promised Land”. The show ended with all the artists on stage together for a version of Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power”.
