Cobra Verde September Tour

I can’t even imagine Cobra Verde rocking the hell out of Maxwell’s stage. God, that will be a great show (as will all the others):

Cobra Verde is pleased as punch to be hoisting the sails on the big ol’ road van and riding the salty seas of rock with riff pirates Nebula. Yes! Riff piracy! There will be swabbing and swashing aplenty, as marshalls make mayhem and drums thunder like cannons. CV will be digging up old cuts from ancient days (think pre-Nightlife) while the men of Nebula dig your watery grave. But wait! There’s more! Beg for mercy and you might hear some new tunes from our upcoming as-of-yet-unreleased new CD.

Nirvana Box Primed For Holiday Success

Courtney Love won’t have to worry about paying her attorneys for all of her legal troubles.

Courtesy of Billboard.com:

Although a label spokesperson declined to confirm specifics, Universal Music Enterprises will release a three-CD boxed set from Nirvana in November. Limited editions of the project will include a DVD, which boasts footage of the Kurt Cobain-led band playing at a 1987 house party. (full story)

Under the Radar Protest Shoot

In David A. Cobb’s Houston Calling column for donewaiting.com, he writes about Under the Radar and their upcoming protest issue. Check out David’s wrap up for a good understanding of the issue.

Basically they had bands make protest signs and took photos of them. In addition these signs are going to be auctioned to raise money. Full details here.

Here’s a few of my favorite photos:

Ted Leo

The Decemberists

Hope of the States

Why?

While noting BMI’s record breaking fiscal year, ArsTechnica asks:

…why is civil law being revised when the industry is seeing all time highs? Why is there an open and vicious attack on Fair Use when record companies are making more than ever?

Why do they want to spare themselves the cost of civil lawsuits against infringers by goading the Department of Justice to bring civil cases themselves? Why is it that relatively no one is discussing how the RIAA bends its statistics to wrangle for more and more support for their business model? Why is it that the RIAA wants legal rights and powers that are not even available to law enforcement? Fair Use.

A Bit of News Regarding This Very Website

I’m at the point where I hate my hosting provider. Never mind the details, but trust me on the pains that swell in my heart over them.

I’ll be switching to a new provider soon, and in a fit of rage I might just do it at some random inconvenient time. This may mean the site is down for a day, or it may mean some people will get the old site address for awhile while the internet “finds” the new home of donewaiting.com.

The best way to stay in contact with us in this (hopefully) very short transition period is to either join our newsletter (you can subscribe under the skull on the upper right hand corner of the page) or become friends with us via our MySpace account found here.

If things go off like they should, this transition should be painless and invisible to the common user. But I expect things won’t be that easy.

The online music store landscape

Rafat Ali, founder of PaidContent.org, Mike Masnick, founder of Techdirt, Jason Schultz, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Derek Slater of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School discuss the online music store marketplace on Ernest Miller’s radio show (mp3).

Low Signs to Sub Pop

Here’s some details. Ever since picking up the new Low boxed set in July I’ve rekindled my love for that band.

Online Music Store battle heats up

Microsoft launches a beta of it’s MSN Music Store, while Apple launches an iTunes affiliate program. The MSN tracks are, not surprisingly, in .WMA format—thus rendering them “incompatible” on an iPod without first transcoding them into .AAC or .MP3.

Participants in the Apple affiliate program can:

_Link directly from your website to any song, album or artist on iTunes. iTunes offers the largest and most diverse legal music download catalog?over 1 million tracks from all five major labels and over 600 leading independents.

_Link directly from your website to over 8,000 audiobooks and popular public radio programs including ?This American Life with Ira Glass,? ?Fresh Air with Terry Gross,? ?Car Talk,? and more.

_Download Apple-designed marketing materials to post on your website and incorporate into email communications.

_Earn 5% commission on all qualifying revenue generated by links posted on your website to iTunes.

_Receive the iTunes Affiliate Newsletter and stay up-to-date on new releases, special promotions, and more.

_Apply to the Apple Store Affiliate Program, with a wide selection of exciting products, including the best-selling iPod and iPod mini
