Gedge Returns the Wedding Present

Playlouder reports that David Gedge has resurrected the long-defunct Wedding Present and has already completed an album scheduled for release later this year.

“We were playing faster and more strummy” he told PlayLouder, “so I just thought, ‘I may as well reform the Wedding Present'”. [full story]
Not that his years with Cinerama were markedly different, but it’s nice to see the return of a familiar name.

I Am A Patriot

While you’re chilling outside MSG protesting the RNC, why not get some people together and sing “I Am A Patriot” by Little Steven Van Zandt. Here’s an mp3 of Eddie Vedder covering it live.

New Eminem In November

Not much information other than it’s coming out in November. With Jay-Z retiring, there’s not been too many interesting moments in popular hip hop. Outkast’s album was amazing, but it was played to death and I can’t remember the last time I put it in my CD player.

Hopefully this will strike the right chords. Eminem has a great track record (D12 exception), each album being better than his last. Hopefully his run as a movie star won’t soften his bite.

(And yes, I said popular hip hop. There’s a ton of great stuff going on in the indie/underground level, but I’m talking mainstream here)

Taking Back Sunday Sure Are Selling Records

Yo, I don’t know anything about Taking Back Sunday, but the kids must. They’re seeling records pronto:

Who are Taking Back Sunday, and how the hell did they manage to sell 260,000 albums in three weeks, without any major-label support? Behind the success of the punk-pop band’s second album, Where You Want to Be — which debuted at Number Three earlier this month and remains in the Top Thirty — is tiny Victory Records, an independent that has found big success championing music that the majors miss. (full story)

I checked out the label’s site and I didn’t recognize any of the bands (except maybe 2). It just goes to show you how little I know.

The Week That Wasn’t

Wait, the MTV Video Awards Are Tonight?

Wow, this awards show is generating no buzz. I remember, not too long ago, when I got really excited about this yearly awards show. Now, I could care less. I guess it’s related to my overall feelings towards MTV. Oh well. At least there’s always VH1 Classics, where I saw a WASP video last night.

Discuss here, in our message board, if you want…..

Tris McCall: The Internet, Music Sites, and Glenn McDonald

In his August 26th entry, Tris McCall writes on a topic very dear to the donewaiting heart:

If the Internet is supposed to be so big, so multifaceted, and so ungoverned, why do all the music review sites now look the same? More disturbingly, why do they all have the same opinions?

It’s because fashion is a more demanding master than any editor could ever be. When you read Pitchfork (which you really shouldn’t), you can practically hear the footsteps of generally-accepted indie opinion hounding the writers.

Tris’ is a voice that I value highly, one that I think we should be aware of, and strive to honor.

As Tris might say, “Rock.”

Freaks and Geeks Soundtrack Coming Next Month

Yeah, I’ll buy this.

First, we want to announce the Sept. 14 release of the Freaks and Geeks Original Soundtrack and Score, from Shout! Factory. It features songs from the show by Joan Jett, The Who, Styx, Rush, XTC, Paul Feig, and many more, as well as a lot of pieces of your favorite score from our long-suffering composer, Mike Andrews. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s also some performances by Mr. Rosso’s band “Feedback,” Millie Kentner, Nick Andopolis, and a couple more surprises. AND there’s liner notes written by critic David Wild and Mr. Rosso, to boot! (Hey, we try to make it worth your while.)

The CD will be in stores on September 14th, or you can pre-order at amazon.com.

Did you ever see the photo of me and some of the cast of “Freaks and Geeks”? Taken last month, at the glorious San Diego Comic Con. Check it here.
