CD/DVD Hybrid Discs
CNET has a story about a technology that I think is a long time coming:
The consortium, which includes major labels EMI Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, said the DualDisc product has a full album on a CD side of the disc and the album in enhanced sound–such as DVD-Audio–on the other side. The DVD side also includes a range of features, such as music videos, interviews, photo galleries, Web links, concert footage and lyrics, the DualDisc Consortium said. (full story)
I like the idea… as long as they can keep prices low. [credz paidcontent.org]

Under the Table and Screaming
The Dave Matthews Band is being sued for dropping a load of crap all over the ears of the music-listening public. No. I mean literally:
As the bus crossed the Kinzie Street bridge, the driver allegedly emptied the contents of the septic tank through the bridge’s metal grating into the river below.
More than 100 people on an architecture tour were showered with foul-smelling waste.

Ted Leo on File Sharing
One thing we like to kick around the donewaiting.com offices a lot is the question of how file sharing financially impacts smaller, indie bands. In an interview with Gawker, Ted Leo couldn’t have spelled it out any better for us:
Check it — Metallica are multi-millionaires. Who cares if they lose $100,000 to file sharing? I don’t. But speaking for myself and my band, a few hundred downloads that aren’t later backed up by purchases can be the difference between us paying rent or not. Ain’t nobody in my band got health insurance, you know what I’m sayin’? I’m just talking about RENT. So yeah — it hurts a bit, but I’m not going to tell people to not do it, it would just be nice if we could put all our cards on the table and forego some of the unproductive rhetoric that surrounds the issue. The RIAA can go fuck itself for all I care — my interaction with that world is almost nil, and I really don’t care if so-and-so has to put that last piece of bling they bought into hock. I’m just saying that there are people out there trying to do it righteously who could use a bit more support, and a good way to show it would be to give them something in return for what they give you. A musician can’t download a guitar, you know? (full interview)

Chicago stunner!
Fireside Bowl has been the numero uno punk rock all-ages venue in Chicago that has weathered years of rumors predicting its imminent demise.
Unfortunately, the rumors seem to have caught up with fact and the club has closed its doors to live music without warning. Brian Peterson of MPshows, the man responsible for bringing music to Fireside Bowl in the first place, is still booking a number of other local venues so it reamins to be seen if bands that were on the calendar for Fireside Bowl will be relocated.
The developing story will unfold in the Lost In Guyville column.
