Wilco Debuts @ #8 on Billboard

Dudes, I normally don’t write anything about the weekly Billboard charts, but this one needs a mention.

Wilco’s latest album debut @ #8 with sales of over 81,000 copies. “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” hit the charts in 2001 @ #13.

But here’s the thing to remember. This was an album that the band was streaming for free over over three months. THREE MONTHS!

They Might Be Giants in Wired Magazine

Did you know that They Might Be Giants are putting togehter a benefit CD for MoveOn.org? Wired Magazine interviews the band this month.

They Might Be Giants isn’t exactly an icon for sociopolitical change in America. Its biggest hits of late include a best-selling children’s CD and the theme song for Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle. But John Flansburgh, half of the quirky avant-pop duo, is fed up with the status quo and aims to shake things up. He’s been working with director Spike Jonze on a benefit album for the activism network MoveOn.org. Due in July, Future Soundtrack for America features original material from rock heavies R.E.M., David Byrne, Blink 182, and more. (full story)

Spoon, Why You Gotta Be Like That?

Last night’s Spoon’s show in Columbus OH was awful. It was so bad that I left early in anger.

If we’re going to lay blame, and trust me we’re going to lay blame, I’d say that the problem was 80% the sound being mic’d poorly and 20% the band phoning in a lukewarm performance.

I’ve seen the band live before and they blew me away. Last night, they just pissed me the hell off.

Tell me I’m wrong (or right) in the message board.

Little Steven Brings the Rock to Randall’s Island

Oh crap, I think I need to figure out how I’m gonna get myself to this:

An offshoot of Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show, the event will be held Aug. 14 at New York’s Randall’s Island. Tickets are $20 and are available through Ticketmaster. (full story)

Rounding out the lineup is the Raveonettes, the Pretty Things, the Mooney Suzuki, the Romantics, the Chesterfield Kings, the Fuzztones, the Electric Prunes, the Contrast, Cocktail Strippers, the High Dials, the Chains and Flaming Sideburns.

Live Wilco

Wilco’s site is offering up a live version of “Hell is Chrome” in the popular mp3 format.

Wilco’s site has more or less become a daily destination for me.
