Smoking Ban
So there’s movement afoot to ban smoking in Columbus music venues (and restaurants, etc.). Out of nowhere, a seven page discussion was birthed today on the topic. There’s some interesting debate going on in there, so give the discussion a whirl.
And if you live in a city or state that currently has a ban, I’d love to get your perspective.

What happens when rock stars run out of creative juice? You form a super-cover-group and name it Camp Freddy? Really. Then you release an album, because cover bands aren’t just for fun anymore, oh no!
[T]he album will feature [Dave] Navarro, Matt Sorum from Velvet Revolver, Billy Morrison from the Cult, Chris Chaney from Jane’s Addiction and Donovan Leitch playing with a revolving cast of singers.
“We’ve recorded an album of tracks that are without vocals at this time and we have certain artists that we’d like to offer a guest spot to,” Navarro said. “Of course we want someone like Josh Todd from Buckcherry, he’s a great rock singer, but at the same time we’d want Macy Gray, we’d want Christina if she’d be down. We’d take Britney if she was down. We don’t really care. The idea is musicians getting together ’cause we love to play and we like to have fun. Style and genres and echelons go out the window.”
Among the diverse singers who have performed with the group are Robbie Williams, Moby, Kid Rock, Puddle of Mudd’s Wes Scantlin, Nikka Costa, Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach, actress Gina Gershon and Bush’s Gavin Rossdale.
Do you think they’re available for weddings?

Alright, Who Had June 22? Anyone?
That’s right. Lollapalooza has pulled the plug on itself before it even began.
Marc Geiger, co-founder of the tour stated, “I am in utter disbelief that a concert of this stature, with the most exciting line-up I’ve seen in years did not galvanize ticket sales. I’m surprised that given the great bands and the reduced ticket prices that we didn’t have enough sales to sustain the tour…”Keep your eyes on your local concert listings, folks. A tour this huge, now forced to splinter apart, might be sending a lot of bands closer to your town who weren’t going to play there originally.

Franz Furor
I’d say about twenty different discussions have been birthed in our message board about problems with the crowds at Columbus shows. It’s good to see that people out there in Williamsburg can complain about the same silly things too.
Yo, New York, at least y’all had a Franz Ferdinand show. The poor hipsters of Columbus had to drive 3.5 hours away to catch them.

New York Times on Wilco
Okay, let’s be honest. Wilco is my favorite band. With the release of their new album Tuesday there’s gonna be a lot of articles written about them. So, in the effort to not transform this site to an obvious Wilco fan club, I won’t be linking a lot of news stories or interviews. It’ll just become too much, and I remember hating a lot of colleague’s websites when the Radiohead album came out, as they tracked every move Thom Yorke did. How did I know what Tom had for lunch every day for 90 days? Bloggers.
BUT … Today’s New York Times piece on the band is a pretty good one, and I definitely recommend you checking it out. While you’re at it, discuss the album with us, in the message board.
I can’t wait for Tuesday.

Rockit Girl is Gina Crosley’s — ex of Veruca Salt — power-pop-rock-punk combo. American Cosmonaut dig early 90’s Brit-pop dancey rock like the Charlatans. Textbook is kind of like Superchunk meets Uncle Tupelo. King Radio is from Boston and lace their pop with strings and horns. Plane sound like early guitar-driven New Order. How can you go wrong?
The rock and/or roll pounds so strongly in my blood that sometimes my head hurts.
Oh wait, that may just be a hang-over…

You want it Columbus? You got it.
There are a number of mighty fine shows happening in Columbus tonight including two shows that I am promoting – the OH CRAP CD release party at Oldfield’s on High and the Mark Geary show at The Treehouse. Even if you don’t make it out to one of those shows, you should try to venture out tonight. There is a nice variety of bands playing, from jangly indie-pop (The Shins @ the Newport) to dirty, sleazy soul (Andre Williams @ Little Brothers) to ’70 British-glam inspired garage rock (The Everyothers @ Club 202) to old school rap (Biz Markie/Doug E. Fresh/Slick Rick @ Promowest). The only thing missing is a good metal show. Anybody know who is playing the Alrosa Villa tonight?
