Here’s one more song to add to your holiday weekend: The Perceptionist’s Memorial Day, a song which takes a hard look at the current Bush administration and the war in Iraq.

2004, Part I
It’s about that time in the year where we should start thinking about the best albums released this year so far…

Avril Lavigne not punk, still has no idea who this "Bow-ee" guy is.
Direct from the Canadian’s mouth:
“You know what’s so gay is, like, all these journalists are, like (saying in faux hushed reverence), ‘Avril Lavigne’s punk and she’s a rebel and she does punk rock music,”‘ Lavigne, 19, said in a recent interview, using the word gay as a slang synonym for stupid. (full story)
Higher dosage seems to be more effective. Viagra vs cialis? Today, oral tablets are the most common ED treatment. This is one of them.
While I am proud Ms. Lavigne is capable of showing a good deal more self-awareness than people give her credit for, I am actually most amused by Reuter’s having to explain her use of the word “gay.”

Yo, Beatles Fans
Memorial Day Weekend pleasures for you.
Also, Chip found this site, which is a woman blogging as if it’s the 1960s, about a new band about to make it big called the Beatles.

Starbucks, Where People Will Be Buying Lots of Music
They changed the coffee landscape. Will they do the same with music?
Since acquiring music company HearMusic in 1999, Starbucks, with 7,500-plus locations worldwide, has been slowly getting into the music business. First, they began selling record compilations alongside their coffee brands. Now they’ve teamed up with Hewlett-Packard Co. to let their 30 million weekly customers burn CDs from a selection of 250,000 songs for a fee-$6.99 for five songs, $1 for each additional song-while sipping lattes. According to Lombard, ?We’ll test 10 stores in Seattle by August and put the technology in 200 stores by year’s end.? It is estimated that by 2006, the service will roll into 2,500 stores. Starbucks is also testing in record and bookstores that serve coffee. The first fully-integrated Starbucks HearMusic store opened in March in Santa Monica, California. (full story)
I know most people are Starbucks haters, but at least they have good taste in music.

“The Way the Music Died” on PBS
This Thursday at 9:00, PBS airs a documentary on the state of the music industry; specifically how the fat cats’ profits have been spiraling downwards. One dramatic stat: “[Yearly] sales have fallen from $40 billion to $28 billion in just three years”
Thankfully, while sales of shitty music flatten, the good guys are going strong.
More info on the PBS show is here.

Phish have turned in their resignation
A note from Trey Anastasio on Phish’s website:
…we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don’t want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost twenty-one years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude.
Their last shows will be this summer culminating in August with their Coventry music festival in Vermont. Scalpers are rubbing their hands together.
