RIAA Mix Volume 1

This is really funny.

You know those fake songs put out by the labels on p2p networks that have 20 seconds of music followed by intense screeching noise? The joke is that riaamix.com is treating those decoy songs as cutting edge noise-pop remixes. They’re also openly selling a CD compilation of these so called “RIAA-mixes”, which hopefully the major labels will try to sue them for.

Billy Corgan As Solo Musician

Billy Corgan debuted his solo material Monday night and the Sun Times has a really good review of the event. A highlight:

In keeping with much of his career, Corgan’s premiere performance as a solo acoustic act before a sold-out crowd at Metro on Monday night was a mixture of musical brilliance and bombastic self-indulgence. But the Great Pumpkin did indeed succeed at crafting a body of work that captured the soul of this city, complete with its many subtleties and inherent contradictions. (full story)

A Quick Note About Prince

“Musicology” is the first Prince album I’ve purchased. Believe it. Anyway, someone in our message board said that everyone who attended Prince’s concert last Friday in Columbus OH were handed a free copy of the new album.

That’s class.

Album Available as Free Download

Everybody likes free albums, right? Right. Donewaiting.com Messageboard Regular Gmby Mike posts up his album free on the web. This is what he says about it:

the scenic style often drifts between the polar extremes of flickering frequency damage and wall-rattling drone. ‘re-mix/rip-off’ offers a bit of both ….ambient & skittish electronics in the vein of the touch, mego, and erstwhile record labels if you’re familiar with any of those.

Download the album here, discuss it in our message board there.

Donewaiting/Los Angeles: Britt Daniel Solo

Britt Daniel, lead singer of Spoon, is on a very small solo tour and our Southern California representative, Han Q. Duong, has the details:

With the solo setup, I thought the arrangements were a surprising success. Daniel was most effective when he was playing up his brooding sexiness with songs like “Everything Hits at Once” and “Anything You Want,” both of which got a solid swoon going on in the audience. The skeletal arrangement brought out the downbeat poignancy of “Me and the Bean,” one of my favorite performances of the night. Songs like “Paper Tiger” and “Stay Don’t Go” didn’t sound very different at all, while “The Way We Get By” was completely translated onto guitar without losing any of its infectiousness. Donewaiting/Chicago: Cleaning Out the Closet

This one slipped past me last week: Donewaiting.com Chicago writer Tankboy reviewed the latest albums by Counting Crows, The Reputation and Wheat as well as The Darkness in New Orleans. He’s certainly keeping busy, fo sure!
