Donewaiting/England: All Tomorrows Parties Day 3

Our ATP coverage wraps up with a review of day three by Steve:

A few hours later, and I?m down the front for McLusky. Guess what. They?re fucking brilliant. Edgy. Angry. Spiky. Fast. Funny. Angry. Did I mention angry yet? I already loved their CDs but I?d not seen them live before and they?re a revelation. ?Are there any Tories here?? singer / guitarist Falco enquires partway through the set. ?Congratulations on making it here without buying a house,? he hurls back at the twats who cheered in response. I was looking forward to their set but I didn?t really expect it to be my favourite of the festival. Full of fire and fury and fucking, it stood head and shoulders above the rest of the weekend by a country mile. (full review)

Steve says he’s gonna go agaon next year, and I’m okay with that. Still, I need to get him out to SXSW in 2005 as well.

donewaiting/Los Angeles: The Decemberists Live (Redux)

Donewaiting.com LA writer Han Q. Duong gives us the goods on the Decemberists’ Los Angeles show last week:

Colin Meloy shyly began the set with “Los Angeles, I’m Yours,” simultaneously serenading and mocking the crowd with its wry lyrics. “I mean no offense,” he apologized as he finished, but the crowd was hot for it, standing to be insulted and paying for the privilege. The set continued with “Billy Liar,” a tremendous “July, July!” and a jaunty “Legionnaire’s Lament,” which is about as catchy a trio of songs as you’ll ever hear. It was as animated an audience as you could expect, mouthing the lyrics with fair accuracy and bouncing along to the pleading choruses. (full review)

    Painful:

One fan at the gig told NME.COM: “During their fifth song he smashed his face into his guitar. I noticed something was wrong immediately because he leaned over to his roadie and pointed to his mouth, then I looked and it looked as if someone was pouring a water bottle down his face constantly, but it was blood. He kept spitting up more and more blood until he started to sing, and before he could finish the first few lines he quickly removed his guitar and only said ?I cant sing, I’ve fucked my face up!? and they all rushed offstage.” (full story)

    Best Album Artwork of 2004?

This is another side project of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age:

The Eagles of Death Metal’s website is pretty awesome, too, in a 1998 HTML sort of way.

    Apple DMCA’s The PlayFair Project

The PlayFair Project is forced offshore–to India

    From The Register

The PlayFair project, which removes fair-use restrictions from music purchased through Apple’s online store, has become the latest victim of offshoring. Actually, that’s not quite true: only the hosting provider has moved to India. Not surprisingly, Apple has used the Digital Millenium Copyright Act to ask SourceForge to remove the project. SourceForge declined to use the Safe Harbor provisions of the Act.

PlayFair uses Jon Johansen’s iTunes circumvention to remove fair-use restrictions from iTunes Music Store files. Apple allows buyers to play the files on three authorized Windows or Macintosh computers and an unlimited number of iPods, and to burn up to ten CDs with the same playlist, which many Apple users have no problem with. However the circumvention allows you to play the files on a Linux machine, for example, or a smartphone or any other MP3 player that supports AAC playback. The new location for PlayFair is at Sarovar, a hosting company for software libre projects based in Trivandrum, India.
