Mia Zapata?s killer convicted of first-degree, premeditated murder.

From an In Music We Trust press release:

Jesus Mezquia, a 49-year-old Cuban-born man living in Florida, plead not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder for the 1993 death of Seattle-based post-punk outfit The Gits’ lead singer Mia Zapata. But, on Thursday, March 25, 2004, after a three day deliberation, the jury delivered the guilty verdict before King County Superior Court Judge Sharon Armstrong. Mezquia now faces 20 years to life in prison for his crimes. Sentencing will begin in April.

Today, Zapata’s friend and former band mate, Steve Moriarty, issued a statement:

“I was in a band called The Gits. We formed in 1986 and moved to Seattle from Ohio in 1989. We released some singles and an album, “Frenching the Bully” in 1992. We had just returned to Seattle from a west coast tour and were finishing our second album, “Enter: the Conquering Chicken” in July of ’93 when our singer, Mia Zapata was abducted and murdered.

In addition to the police investigation, we hired a private investigator. Every band from Nirvana to Hootie and the Blowfish played benefit shows to help us fund the investigation. The years passed by and few clues were revealed. We never gave up hope that we would find the bastard who killed our friend, plunged our community into fear and ended The Gits.

Unknown to us, the medical examiner who examined Mia’s body saved a skin sample surrounding Mia’s wounds. In 1993 DNA science was just starting to be used in forensics. The M.E. showed incredible foresight to know that technology would advance to be capable of identifying the man who created the wounds. This DNA sample was put in a national data base of violent felons and matched a guy in Florida. Miami police picked him up and he was extradited to Seattle to face murder charges.

On March 1st the trial began. I covered the details of the trial here. On March 25th he was convicted of the premeditated rape and murder of Mia. Sentencing will be in April. He faces 25 to life in prison. We are hoping that many fans and friends will attend the sentencing to influence the judge to give him the maximum penalty.

Check here for the date to be announced soon.”

Rye Coalition Triumphantly Return to NJ For Donewaiting.com Concert

Starting Friday, Donewaiting.com proudly brings you a monthly Jersey City showcase @ Uncle Joe’s. We’re kicking off the series with a biggie. Rye Coalition will be headlining, and we have to be honest with you: this show will probably sell the fuck out.

This is the first time these Jersey City local boys have played in front of their home crowd in a long, long time. The first time since the Dave Grohl buzz. The first time since the Rye buzz. Donewaiting.com Jersey City writer Stephen says:

By the way, Rye Coalition wanted me to let you know that they are very happy and excited to be playing this party. The boys have been away for awhile – back and forth between home and LA – recording with Dave Grohl, working on some of the hottest, most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. They feel honored to have the opportunity to debut these songs at Uncle Joe’s, in their backyard, with all of their friends and neighbors. Please welcome them home.

The doors open at 8. Get their early. This isn’t a joke.

Moviola: The Donewaiting.com Interview

Chip interviews our pals Moviola and you can read it right here. They’ve just put out a fine, fine new album and it’s definitely worth your cash.

  • Courtney Love keeps on keepin' on

One of my favorite sites, Slatch, has published a summary of an interview with Courtney Love a few nights ago. Here are my two favorite parts:

Worked well for me. Viagra australia! The most professional care at the world-class pharmaceutical factories of India.

    – One girl filed a paternity suit against her. The girl claimed that Courtney told her to sleep with a basketball player, which resulted in her getting pregnant. Courtney settled for $10 grand.

    – Dave and Krist are gazillionaires and they are trying to steal her daughter’s money. She tells the DJ, “I didn’t realize you could use the argument ‘She is a bitch’ in a court of law, but apparently that holds up.”

Read the whole summary here, and for god’s sake, if anyone has a tape of this get it to me post haste!

    Everybody Loves the Decemberists

    Even the New York Times:

He takes boundless pleasure in language, seeming to to rejoice every time he uses a word like “pantaloons” or “pinioned.” He also has a thin, hale voice and four resourceful band mates. For “Leslie Anne Levine,” about a baby’s ghost (“My mother birthed me far too soon/Born at 9 and dead at noon”), the keyboardist switched to accordion, the guitarist switched to pedal steel, and the bassist picked up a bow. We’ve been blabbing about them for some time now, but maybe you just needed to read about them via the NY Times?

    iPod Listeners Are Easy Marks

Time to invest in some real headphones:

West Midlands police have issued a stark warning to iPod users: ditch the white headphones or pay the price … The thief then asked Baskerville if he was listening to an iPod and, receiving an affirmative answer, he “pulled a knife out and started waving it at me, saying: ?Well hand it over, then.? I gave it to him and he ran off. He must have known I was wearing an iPod because of the white headphones.” (full story)

I ditched those white earbuds the day I got my iPod.

Donewaiting/England: All Tomorrows Parties Day 1

Our singular European writer, Steve Miller, is @ All Tomorrows Parties and has filed a first day report:

All Tomorrows Parties is weird. Get a shitload of underground bands and put them on for three days in a holidays camp which doesn?t look like it?s been furbished since, oh, the 50s. I get freaked out by the bingo results board next to the main stage, and by the giant octopus jealously guarding the stairs. At the check in desks there are instructions about checking out overnight. ?Hand your keys in at the security hut,? it says, helpfully adding in brackets, ?Next to the crocodile.? The whole weekend is a bit like that. (full review)

Hey, I like Modest Mouse. What other bands should I check out?

MusicPlasma hails itself as the “musical virtual search engine.” The frontpage of the site says that “musicplama helps you identify all the artists fitting your musical tastes.” Type in the name of a band and find out what other bands are similar. Currently the site favors bigger named band (major label and indie) and some of the picks are a little bit off (like Moviola is directly linked to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs which doesn’t seem quite right) but it’s a fun tool to play with.

Blogs That Have All These (Uncredited) Awesome Music Scoops

A bad trend I see on some of the music blogs I click around is posting an amazing scoop on their site (Lollapalooza line-up, etc) and not offer any sort of link back to the source. If you come across such lazy writing, chances are those people got the scoop from The Velvet Rope.

    Now you know.

Polyphonic Spree Music Video for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”

Man, this is one strange video created for The Polyphonic Spree’s “Light and Day” song that’s used in the film. It’s so beautifully weird, I love it. Watch now.

PS: The movie is amazing. [credz aintitcool]
