LEAKED SXSW SCHEDULES???

Officially, the day to day schedules for SXSW have not been released. However, if you tool around the SXSW website, you’ll find links that show day by day schedules for this year. These schedules say 2003 on them, but the dates (March 19) match up with this year, as well as the bands that have been announced.

Links on the SXSW Site: Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday

I’ve compiled all the dates and information and put them in one easy to read format here.

All of this could be total crap, so don’t plan your life around this just yet. But since it’s on the SXSW site, I’d say it’s somewhat reliable.

Lesson to all websites: never put your information on the web before it’s ready for the public. We’ll find it.

  • Super Bowl Season in Houston TX

While some of you are getting ready for the Super Bowl in Houston this weekend, there are others who are happy about all the music going on in town because of the event. Lots of good bands playing, and our donewaiting.com Houston writer David A Cobb has written up a complete line-up just for you.

WOXY Bought Out By the Man

One of the best (THE BEST??) radio stations in the country just got bought out by the man. Sad sad sad news. Discussion and more details here.

The company buying them is from Dallas, and currently they own just a handful of stations around the country. “At least it’s not Clear Channel” is the best thing we can think of at this point. Stream it while it’s still good.

Major labels just keep abusing the meaning of the word ?essential,? money just keeps on rolling in.

I liked Alice In Chains. I really did. I?ve never even held it against them that they were easily one of the biggest bandwagon jumpers within the deluge of early ’90’s Seattle grunge acts. Layne Staley had a really cool voice and the group did kick out a few majorly impressive tunes (not least among them the killer ?I Can?t Have You Blues.”)

But really. Do we need this?

The legacy of Seattle rock act Alice In Chains will be celebrated on a two-disc retrospective, “The Essential,” due March 16 from Columbia/Legacy. The 29-track album features the most well-known hits from the Layne Staley-led group, a stalwart of rock radio in the 1990s and an undeniable influence on such recent acts as Staind and Godsmack, the latter of whom is named after an Alice In Chains song. (full story)

While their previous ?Greatest Hits? collection was only a measly ten songs please keep in mind that this is a group that only released three proper albums in their career. Plus, they have already released a three-disc boxed set ? along with a one-disc distillation of said set — so forgive me if I think this ?essential? collection is a bit of an overkill.

Maybe the labels would be better served by releasing new and exciting music rather than raping the memory of the deceased. Or maybe I?m just a dreamer in this big ol? crazy world.

I fought the RIAA and the RIAA won

This Sunday, millions of bloated, drunk people will see the RIAA get smeared by a Pepsi ad.

As reported in Signal to Noise, Pepsi will be running a SuperBowl ad to tout its 100 million song download giveaway in conjunction with Apple’s iTunes.

The beauty is that the ad will feature “16 real-life teenagers who were sued by the recording industry for illegally downloading music from the Internet”.

    The press release is here.

    Announcing: Donewaiting.com SXSW Music Blog

To prepare for this year’s SXSW Music Festival, we’ve started a blog to keep track of all the news, parties and concerts going on. Check it out right here, dudes.

Me and Chip Midnight will be attending the festival, and you can expect lots of daily overage. My plan is to do quick interviews with 50 bands. We’re also gonna take a ton of photos. Lots of posting. It will be a lot of fun. It will be insane. I may lose my mind.

    Donewaiting/Interview: Gomez

DW Indy writer Danica Johnson has interviewed Gomez, and you can read it here.

I’ve always loved this band. The first time I saw them @ Irving Plaza in NYC many years ago I thought I was the only person there that didn’t have an English accent.

    Billy Corgan Blog

Billy Corgan has a new site, and a blog of sorts that you can see here. You can’t link to any of the posts, and it’s all done in Flash. Two things I hate.

    Small Labels Fighting Merger

A group of small record labels in Europe are fighting the Sony/BMG merge that is in the process of happening.

“Our main point is access. We want to avoid a situation where a combined entity makes it impossible for smaller independent labels and artists to get access to broadcasters and retailers,” said Philippe Kern, secretary general for IMPALA. (full story)
