dw/Los Angeles: The Gossip Live Review

Han Q. Duong can go from seeing The Decemberists one day to the Gossip the next and not even think twice about it. He is versatile, and will survive the Nuclear War.

Once Beth Ditto she takes the stage, you’re not paying attention to anything else. Ditto delivers fierce punk with a soul/blues/gospel twist to spine-tingling effect. Dancing, shimmying and shaking, she’s in constant motion, pushing at such a maddening pace that she’s worked fanning herself into her repertoire of dance moves. When the Gossip tore into “Fire/Sign,” the crowd was absolutely churning, begging for revolution and deliverance with every note. With the chorus of “Jason’s Basement,” the Troubadour wasn’t far from the sweaty house parties that the Gossip started at. Singing “no inhibitions / come and dance with meeeeeee” repeatedly, it wasn’t long before fans started taking Ditto up on her offers, climbing right on stage for an overheated dance party that threatened to blow the doors right off the place. The Rise of the Meat Puppets, the fall of Cris Kirkwood

The Arizona Republic writes a really great account of the history of the Meat Puppets and the Kirkwood brothers. Read it here. I never realized how bad things got for Cris over the years, Jesus.

Tap, Tap… Dirty Needle Injection

It might be unfortunate that DW is getting the hip-hop injection, but rest assured you’ll still find this site twitching in an alley way, half-dead and foaming at the mouth. So roll up a sleeve… this first hit is dirty but we have to start somewhere.

The muppet rapper known as Cam’Ron is selling his big, fat, pink Range Rover on eBay.

Jon Hernandez to Give Us a Hip Hop Injection

Jon Hernandez from Hip Hop Anonymous is joining the donewaiting.com staff while he figures out what’s up with his site (and maybe even after that). Hip hop is a very important musical genre that we don’t give enough attention to here on the site, and hopefully this will be the beginning of the remedy.

Webb Brothers Import Album on iTunes

Two donewaiting.com writers put the Webb Brothers self titled album on their favorites of 2003 lists. Unfortunately, the album was only available as an expensive import …. until now!

You can pick it up from the iTunes music store for $9.99.

Music Blogs You Love, Music Blogs You Hate

Give me links on each. Or you can email. Part of a larger thing I’m writing for donewaiting later this month.

Mad Props

Mad props to Chromewaves and 75 or Less for getting Bloggie nominations.

Let’s be honest here for a second. Chromewaves is one of the few good music blogs out there, period. And there’s so many bad ones. So many. It actually pains me. They’re either recycling links other people posted without offering any sort of extra spin on them, or just starfucking the hell out of their local celebs. I hate these sites.

But Chromewaves is one of the good guys.

And 75 or Less is a music review site that gets it right, too. I even contribute to them every once in awhile. So they can’t be all that good. Winks.

We don?t know who you are but we?re gonna sue you anyway!

The U.S. music industry on Wednesday filed 532 lawsuits against individuals it accuses of illegally downloading copyrighted material online without paying, identifying defendants only by Internet addresses after a court ruling made it more difficult to subpoena their names.

Donewaiting.com Launches San Francisco Column!

You knew it was gonna happen sooner or later.

For those of you who don’t know, before I moved to Columbus I lived in San Francisco for a year. That was a special time for me, and I still miss lots of things from the Bay Area. Luckily, Craig Ness has decided to join our staff as the San Francisco donewaiting.com writer, and hopefully we can live in the city through his writing.

Please visit Foghorn, our new San Francisco column, and then be sure to say hello to Craig in the message board!
