Saturday Recap

Here’s a quick rundown of what I did today.

10am Panel: Better Blogging Brainstorming: Zero brainstorming, maximum snoozer.

11am Panel: Battle Decks: Hybrid improv/power point presentations. People had to give power point presentations based on hilarious slides they’d never seen before. Started off great, slowly started to fizzle.

12pm Lunch: Jackalope Burger: Just as delicious as last year. You haven’t seen the last of us this week, Mr. Jackalope. Tomorrow is Camino de Casino de Camino. (yeah I know that’s not the right name, bugger off)

2pm Documentary: Oilcrash We’re all fucked.

4:30pm Documentary: Cruel and Unusual Transgendered people do not have it easy in prisons.

Sundown: Nature: The Bats of Austin, TX Watching (literally) over a million bats fly over me at a little park by the river was both amazing and terrifying.

7pm: Happy Hour: Embassy Suites Thanks for the drinks, manager of hotel. See you tomorrow, same time.

8:30pm: Harmony: Reconnecting With My Great Friend Anastasia She’s doing fabulous things (a book next year!) and is going to be speaking at a panel tomorrow @ 11am. Check it out.

9:30pm: Party: Frog Design SXSW Kickoff No idea what band played, got a free water. Seemed like DJ Shadow or RJD2 should have performed. Crowded.

12am: Documentary: This Film Is Not Yet Rated Engrossing and entertaining documentary about the MPAA ratings board and how screwed up their system is. Great Q&A afterwards with the director. (even better pizza from the Alamo Drafthouse)

Bats. They’re everywhere. We were secretly hoping that they’d attack the crowd and carry away a small baby and raise it as their own.

  2. When and where do the bats fly? Is there a chance I can see them this week? I also wish I could see the premiere of The Rise and Fall of Leslie Vernon.

  3. the bats fly out from under the bridge on congress street. wish i could give you more info but that’s as much as i know about austin. that’s where we watched them from. if you can find the austin statesman newspaper office, then you’re in the right place.

  4. The bats, which happen to be the worlds largest Urban bat population, typically fly out every night at sun down from the Congress St. Bridge. You can ask anyone in Austin and they can tell you how to get there. If you are at SXSW and downtown Congress is the big street running North South with the Capitol Building at the end of it. I love the bats.

  5. The bands at the Frog Design party were (from first to last)
Greatest American Heroes (doing all those silly covers of tv songs, etc)
The Lord Henry (ripping of the Strokes)
The Boy Scout Cookies (or something like that)

  6. I prefer to stand on the bridge and watch the bats fly out from under me. The little park is cool, but the bats WILL pee and poop on ya. Unless you like smelling like bat guano…
