Listen: Neil Young’s “Living With War”

The album will be available for a digital download on Tuesday but you can stream the entire thing right here, right now.

“Living With War is a fierce, comprehensive indictment of the Bush administration and all its failures, but it doesn’t feel like an outsider’s dissent,” wrote one reviewer, in the singer’s native Canada. “It’s the work of someone who clearly identifies with the core values of ordinary middle Americans who voted for Bush.” (continued)

After you give it a listen, post up reviews in the comments.

  1. i think it’s pretty good. when i heard about it i thought it was gonna be terrible, but i was wrong.

  2. This is Neil’s best album since the early 90s, if not earlier.

The lyrics are a bit hamfisted, but it rocks in a way that Neil hasn’t rocked in years with the exception of Greendale’s Sun Green and Be The Rain.

It also doesn’t feature any tunes dragged out from years past a la Freedom and Ragged Glory.
It doesn’t repeat melodies like Sleeps With Angels.
It sounds focused and energetic unlike Broken Arrow and Are You Passionate.
It is recorded properly — even for first takes — unlike Greendale’s demo quality.
It isn’t a rehash of acoustic glories like Harvest Moon, Silver & Gold, and Prairie Wind were.

The last album with this level of energy, song quality, and lyrical content was Mirror Ball.

Though if Neil wanted to get this message out, why is he touring big barns with CSN&Y for $150+ this summer? Why isn’t he going to college towns for $30-50 max and playing to the kids?

  3. Holy fuck, the horns are awesome. Thank you, Neil Young.

  4. I keep going back and playing it again. 3 times today. I love it, love it. Good ol’ Neil brings the rock again.
