Earlier in the week we linked to Clayton’s mashup of the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” and the Beatles “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club.” Well, this morning I received an e-mail from Clayton saying that Capitol and EMI Records have sued him because of his mashup. Read more here. Keep in mind, Clayton offered the downloads for free – he never made any money off of it.
This really demonstrates how copyright law is broken. Could you imagine any money being lost by either the Beach Boys or the Beatles over the mashup? Incredibly doubtful. No one is going to be downloading that work for free and then deciding they don’t need to buy either of the original properties.
