MTV, We Were JOKING About Nirvana

MTV, you’re so silly. You have a news article that says “Nirvana At SXSW? Police At Bonnaroo? Behind The Bogus Festival Lineups”.

They then write:

Are the re-formed Smashing Pumpkins set to rock Lollapalooza? Will the long-dormant Police return at Bonnaroo? How about a reunited Nirvana taking the stage at South by Southwest, only with Ben Kweller playing guitar and singing Kurt’s vocals?

Hmm, where could that have possibly come from? Perhaps my freaking brain, that’s where! On January 17, I wrote:

UNLIKELY
– Nirvana reunion with Ben Kweller on keyboards and Jonny Polanski on vocals

MTV.com also wrote:

But incredibly, they’re all “100 percent confirmed” by sources with intimate knowledge about such things.

So not only did they get my joke wrong (it’s Kwellar on keys and Jonny on vocals, MTV.com!), but they also say that a rumor that I posted as “unlikely” as me saying it’s 100% true.

I find this really funny, but I am demanding a boycott of MTV and Viacom until they credit my fake news story! BOYCOTT, PEOPLE!!

(Lesson learned: maybe I need to be a little clearer with my jokes….)

  1. I thought it was a pretty good joke, but then again I’m not some stooge working at MTV.

  2. Ben Could sing Rape Me and then put tampons in his nose. I’d buy a wristband to see it.

  3. MTV.com is just using that as a (horrible) lead-in to the story. Further in is this:

Tom Thornton, a writer for the [Austinist.com], explained. “And though SXSW hasn’t announced most of these bands, we feel pretty confident that they’re all going to be here. Of course, there are some pretty ridiculous rumors out there; I heard there was going to be a Nirvana reunion, with Ben Kweller playing guitar, and there were some rumors that David Hasselhoff is going to be here. But, like I said, we’re not about to include anything like that on our list.”

So they interviewed someone who clearly said it was a rumor, but used it as “100% confirmed” in the beginning.

    I wanna write for MTV.com. :P

  4. This is the part of that article that pissed me off:

  5. In the current Magnet Magazine, Phil Sheridan’s “the Back Page” offers a humorous look at 2007. In 2007, after the “success” of the New Cars, Todd Rundgren will join Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic for a Nirvana comeback tour. :)

  6. i boycotted MTV since my 8th grade yr

  7. anders levant

i have it on very good authority that zombie jeff buckley is playing sxsw.

  8. It is a funny joke and it is stupied that they would say it was 100% true…But I for one would not like anyone singing in the place of Kurt Cobain..So if the fake ever become a real truth I dont think I could listen to it because it wouldnt be the same..
