  1. Any ideas or rumors who’s playing the Matador showcase?

Also, if someone with a badge buys a wristband for me, how much would those wristbands cost- $130, $160, more less? not looking forward to driving from Houston at a drop of a hat to get wristbands.

  2. mogwai is playing it.

  3. Is it even confirmed that Badge holders will be able to score a wristband? I’m not sure what the policy has been in the past.

  4. are there any good pre-SXSW shows going on monday? i’m flying in earlier than usual. is it better to fly into Chicago’s Ohare or Denver to arrive in austin?

how early do i need to wait in line with a wristband for shows? im not asking about the really big showcases just in general. how’s the weather in austin this time of year? any tips on surviving the entire week?

  5. waiting in line with wristbands – it depends obviously on the show and what time you show up. unless there is no demand for a certain show, you won’t be able to just walk up at 9.50pm for a 10pm show. best bet is to get to the club one or two sets before the band you want to see. Club size makes a difference, though I imagine if you want to see the Stooges even at Stubbs with a wristband, get there at 8.

  6. douchebag- badge holders get a wristband? badge holders get priority entry over wristbands, so it’s redundant for them to get one. Wristbands are for non-industry people so locals and others can go to the shows for a reasonable price.

sfgal- usually shows die down the week before sxsw, but the best place to check will be http://www.showlistaustin.com, they do pretty complete listings year-round, and so far the only people on that monday that i’d recommend are shoot the stars and kill them (haven’t seen the others, but these guys are a ridiculous drummer / vocalist/toyaccordian duo that put on a good show). Wristband wait time varies depending on popularity, size of the venue, and what’s going on down the street… so if you get here early I would recommend checking out the venues you want to attend beforehand and figuring out how crazy you think that particular showcase is gonna get, because if the stooges are playing at plush (ridiculous fictional example), you’d have to line up the week before, but if it’s at stubbs they can hold a couple of thousand. The weather is hectic as always, although last year was really nice (a bit chilly at night).

    Surviving the week-
ALWAYS have a plan B, you’re just not gonna be able to get into some shows
if you can, get a hold of a bike
chase free booze- that’s what its there for.
Free energy drink trucks are your friend.
tacos! tacos! tacos! (they’re ubiquitous/good with alcohol/help you keep it down/portable/cheap)

  7. sfgal: our buddies over at http://obsolete-inc.com/ do this thing called Rock To Fakie (he told me about some great bands that I am unable to disclose till he spills it) which happens on Tuesday. As well as many other shows — Emo’s also has a big show on Tuesday as well. Stay tuned. more info as it’s available.

  8. Austinite – You’re missing the point. Badgeholders in the past could buy one wristband, which helps me out, because a buddy with a badge could get me a wristband without me busting my ass to get to Austin when wristbands go on sale. Just wondering what the cost is this year for going that route. Doesn’t matter I guess since most likely I’ll be driving to Austin anyway so I know I have it.

  9. Badge holders have had the option of buying one wristband in the past. I’m not sure it’s confirmed that option will exist this year, but I’d consider it likely. I don’t recall if the price last year was 150 or 175.

American and United both fly from Chicago (O’Hare) to Austin. Southwest flies from Chicago (Midway) to Austin. United and Frontier fly form Denver to Austin. I believe there is a higher level of service from Chicago, but I don’t know if that means prices are better or not. Either city is big, so price your options and choose the best one, is my opinion.

Weather in Austin in March can be hot, cold, or in between. Or maybe both while you’re here. I’d check weather.com right before you pack.

  10. Speaking of http://obsolete-inc.com/ — they have space available for holding an event, party or show. The http://obsolete-inc.com/ studios and http://www.luckyflamegallery.com/lfg/ (nothing on the website and formerly Iron Gate Studios) are connected – the event would be in Lucky Flame . This is the same place they have the Flatstock BBQ every year.

They have obtained a noise permit, will have port-a-johns for events, parties or shows inside and/or outside small kitchen inside for use. It’s conveniently located at 5th & Robert Martinez – plenty of parking. $300 for all Friday evening. I was going to have bands play from 7pm-2am, but found a location more conducive to my event.

If interested or you’d like more info, please contact Billy Bishop at billy@obsolete-inc.com and tell ’em Sherry sent cha!

  11. I think its based on how many badges are sold. Theyre trying to encourage badge sales, and if enough of them sell, theyll limit the # of wristbands to the 4000 initially sold. But that hasnt happened yet.

  12. PRE-sxsw show (FREE!! $5 for minors) with 3 stages:
    (out-FREE): Lemurs/ Quien Es Boom/ Lalaland/ The Laughing
    (in-free): brothers & sisters/ the explorers/ white denim/ black before red
(Free-lounge): when dinosaurs ruled the earth/ good times crisis band/ ume/ ralph white

  13. MY BAD!!!—Previous post is EMO’s Tues. 13th

  14. According to the SXSW folks, they are unclear if they will provide delegates with the opportunity to buy wristbands this year. This was three days ago…as always, everything subject to change.

  16. Ooh! Beauty Bar, what a hot lineup you have! I know where I’ll be on the 13th.

Anyway, my advice, as someone who’s been going to SXSW for a decade now, is to have a Plan B, Plan C, and even a Plan D. It’s get increasingly difficult to get into some of the big/good showcases, but that’s not actually a bad thing. I saw a lot of Plan Ds last year, and ended up discovering some fantastic music that way.

And this is totally off subject, but who here does NOT know what “sleet” is?

  17. “Sleet” is a Texas term for rain that goes betweeen hail and rain, depending on how cold it is.

Hail is frozen Rain, does damage to cars & hurts…

It most likely won’t be that cold in March.

  18. Anyone know someone who works at Waterloo Records that can get the inside scoop on when wristbands go on sale? I had a friend who worked their last year, but that person no longer works there. This, of course, is based on the assumption that Waterloo Records will be where wristbands go on sale.

  19. did interpol cancel? what gives..

  20. yea, whats up with Morrissey and Interpol?? i think morrissey was just a false alarm and i keep hearing that interpol cancelled.

  21. I know someone who works at Waterloo and for the Austinist and currently they have no clue as to when wristbands will go on sale (or where for that matter). I do believe that after going to SXSW for about 10 years, this is the year I give it the ol’ FU and find something better to do.

  22. Morrissey was never actually booked for this year…someone must have confused last year’s schedule, because my sources told me he was never even a possibility this year.

  23. Interpol pulled out about two weeks ago. They were originally booked and announced.

Morrissey was reported as playing back in December by a large UK radio station (who were likely looking at the ’06 schedule), but then nothing more ever came of it.

UK’s very popular The View have also backed out due to visa/passport issues.

  24. sleet is not a “Texas term.”

  25. So we are a month out and the rumor mill has already kicked into high gear. What are the juicy secret shows everyone has heard about so far?

I think the two “best” rumors I’ve heard are Daft Punk and Rage Against the Machine. Now…talk amongst yourselves.

  26. as i explained to my 7 year old just this morning, sleet is frozen rain. hail is a piece of dust or dirt that gets caught up in the clouds and keeps circulating and freezing layer after layer until it finally falls down to earth. if you cut open a hailstone you can see the layers.

that being said, anyone have any idea when the huge download of sxsw mp3s will be coming?

  27. I will ONLY post SHOW NEWS from now on. I promise.
Thanks storm field (Meteorologist?) and settledown (Might need a name change?)for making this a fun and friendly blog.

Can anyone confirm if VNV Nation is playing or not?

  29. SXSW is really bringing me down….the whole experience this year has really left me wondering why I go every year and drop a couple grand (badge, hotel, etc). If you’re associated with a band, as I am, dealing with SXSW this year has sucked. They’ve made this a completely unenjoyable experience. I better have a great time this year or my run of 7 straight years at south by will end. Just venting….

  30. The Uk line up is the strongest ever with Scotland alone sending some 18 bands over including Jyrojets, Popup, My Latest Novel and The Twilight Sad. The Scottish Arts Council showcase ar Lava Lounge on the Friday will be fantastic.

  31. VNV Nation is not on the band list (currently as of 2/6/07). That doesn’t mean they won’t be added, but they aren’t listed right now.

  32. IIRC, the mp3 torrent was released around 2/22 last year (not that the past is necessarily indicative of the future)

  33. Austin Tom…where did you hear that Interpol cancelled??

I was really hoping to see them this year, sucks if they really did cancel!

  34. I know nothing about the Daft Punk rumor, but I can tell you with assurance that the Rage Against the Toaster rumor is not true.

  35. If we’re going to start spreading rumors, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have a gap b/w their 3/12 show in Oklahoma City and their Japan dates starting on 3/19. Coincidence?

  36. austin chronicle has updated performer list today. additions include mew, martha wainwright.
