145 UK bands. 365 Canadian bands. Let the party begin. Sparklehorse confirmed. Last minute additions of two great Scandinavian acts, Peter Bjorn & John and Mew. The first show Wednesday night is always special. My choice is from the pick of the new Uk acts at that time. Select from
Popup @Whiskey Bar
Simple Kid @Copa
Bat For Lashes @Dirty Dog Bar
Future Of The Left followed by I Like Trains @ Emo’s Jnr
The Sunshine Underground @ Stubbs
Although they could all be trumped by Die!Die!Die! al the way from New Zealand to
Habana Calle 6 Patio.
My picks to make a big impact are Roger Dean Young & The Tin Cup, The Diableros, High Dials and Mother Mother.
Anyone know the email address to request an invite for the Duke British music party? It was up a few days ago and now its not and it just says invite only…
Buzzcocks — hell yeah! that whole Saturday night lineup at Emo’s kicks ass. Meat Puppets! Bad Wizard! Poison Idea! Thee (Riverboat?) Gamblers! Turbonegro!
Here’s a Thursday night tip — Jeff Finlin at 8 @ the Rykodisk showcase at Friends. Absolutely great singer songwriter.
And a Saturday night one — Turn Me On Dead Man at Club Deville. Cool psychy band from SF.
mike, doesn’t “invite only” mean they decide who can RSVP? i think that’s why they took the email down — it would be pointless to request one. so i think it’s kind of pointless for them to post that party up in the first place =/
It fucking sucks to not be 21…on the first night alone there are at least 3 acts I was hoping to see that I’m not allowed to. At least I’m eighteen, or it seems like I could get in to just about nowhere.
my personal favorites:
-the good the bad and the queen
-kings of leon
-the stooges
-peter bjorn and john
-mando diao
-albert hammond jr
-the black angels (who ill prob wont see since ive seen them like 10 times)
-the buzzcocks
-the dears
-bloc party (not really)
what happened to>???
-morrissey
-interpol
….so pissed bout interpol, i was really excited about it
Tom Morrello w/ special guests at the parish. I take a class there live sound enginerring and my teacher is the house sound engineer. I will know who is going to be ther on Monday. Could t be zach and co?
about half the bands i want to see are all playing on thursday from 12-2 it seems like. i’ll probably choose vashti bunyan, but i’d really like to see the my brightest diamond acoustic set. at least andrew bird, the apples in stereo, and alela diane are playing at different times.
Powersolo (Thursday at Friends) — A cross between Primus and the rednecks from Deliverance, playing blazingly fast. And from Denmark. Amazing.
Wildhearts – Saturday at the Dirty Dog. if you’ve never seen ’em, don’t miss this. One of the greatest live rock bands ever. Too bad the powers that be felt the need to put them directly against Turbonegro and the Saints.
The Thursday night Norton Showcase – The Alarm Clocks are a 60’s garage band who just reunited. I saw them in Memphis last year and they were just fabulous. Then you’ve got the mighty Reigning Sound on the bill and Sam the Sham (“Wooly Bully” was his hit, for you youngsters).
The Japanese night at Elysium (Friday) — Japanese night is to SWSW what the Gospel Tent is to New Orleans’ JazzFest — a guaranteed party that will restore your faith in the power of happy music.
The Ponderosa Stomp night at Opal Devines on Friday — Great soul from Bobby Patterson and Barbara Lynn w/ an amazing house band featuring Buckwheat Zydeco on the Hammond B3.
Early Saturday night at Antones — Legendary British rock singer Terry Reid followed by the wonderful Charles Wright and Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Orchestra (“Express Yourself”).
The Brought Low – Friday night at Room 710. They’re from NYC, they write great songs and they sound like early Lynryd Skynyrd. Their debut was easily one of the top five albums of 2006.
Buzzed to find Mumm-ra suddenly confirmed. If you like UK indie and havent heard of them check them out, if you are upset Forward Russia isnt playing check out foals and the hottest band in the UK far hotter than stupid the view or fratellis or automatic is the ABSOLUTELY amazing Pigeon detectives. and of course Little man tate are amazing too Will be avoiding stubbs at all costs- appalling venue too big too impersonal and always the crowd dictated to by the bigger than should be at sxsw headliner of the night.
my friday night schedule is going to be crazy…
the hymns – brandi carlile – badly drawn boy/the good, the bad, and the queen – someone still loves you boris yeltsin
otherwise, jesse malin isn’t on the schedule (yet). that’s disappointing.
Who wants to predict what the most impossible show to get into will be?
Two years ago I tried to get into Astralwerks’ showcase (Kings of Convenience, Phoenix) at Antone’s (no wristband) and was the second person in line at 2 in the afternoon and STILL wasn’t able to get in. Maybe it was just Antone’s…
Anyway – my prediction is Girl Talk and 65daysofstatic or maybe Sparklehorse at Antone’s. I know Stubb’s always does the crazy shows but they seem to be easy enough to get into. What do you think?
Misterthom – hardest to get in to?
Forro In The Dark on Wednesday.
Bob Mould on Thursday
Simian Mobile Disco on Friday
Midlake on Saturday.
Misterthom – I have a question too. What is the worst venue in Austin _ I pick Bourbon Rocks. They play am friendly rock in between every set regardless of the crowd they have in . Last year I saw Hopewell followed by Brian Jonestown Massacre. The garbage they played in between did all it could to kill the atmsophere. It was as if Musical Time stopped at Foreigner, Kanasa and Boston .
This year I will need to return to see the Found magazine launch party there, which has Okkervil River, Tally Hall and The Walkmen. Hope someone has found the dj booth OFF switch.

does anyone in the US know 65daysofstatic? I hadnt really heard much about them until I started looking into them because of here. Good, bad & the queen and stooges will of course be impossible to get into but I dont go to SXSW to hear huge bands like those.
My advice is see if any of the bands you are trying to see are touring anywhere near you due to SXSW and see them there then see others at sxsw. pre and post sxsw will be busy for me because of this and I will have already seen Lily Allen, mute math, field music, the young knives, cold war kids tokyo police club and cinematics and we are still looking into others
@Jane
You’re probably right about 65daysofstatic. I know the Stooges showcase will be crowded but my experience with Stubbs has been that if you get there early enough you can get in. As for trying to catch bands while they’re touring near me, I try but I live in Louisiana and can only catch acts when they come to Dallas, which is 3 hours away. So if they’re playing during the week (as they usually do in Dallas) I’m out of luck. Sounds like you’ve caught a bunch of great shows though. It’s always nice to have some bands out of the way to narrow down the ol’ SXSW schedule.
@The Burning Club
Crap. Is Buffalo Billiards small? I was hoping to catch the Thursday show there (Bob Mould, Say Hi To Your Mom, Aqueduct, Menomena.)
For worst venue: Room 710 is my least favorite. I love the smaller venues and the show I saw there was great but it was just a big sweaty mass of people in that dirty little bar last time I was there. But that Found launch party is sounding nice. Never been to the Bourbon Rocks though. If they’re going to play arena rock hopefully they’ll at least have free beer. I was thinking of catching that or Schubas’ SXSW Round-Up (Midlake, Cold War Kids, Architecture in Helsinki, Bishop Allen) on Thursday.
For hard to get into how about Cursive, Pipettes, and Tokyo Police Club at Beauty Bar Patio. I’ve never seen the Beauty Bar Patio though so I’m not sure of its capacity.
MrThom
Spoilt for Choice on Thursday afternoon. There’s the New Zealand showcase in the North By Tent with Die!Die!Die!, The Miny Chicks, Gasoline Cowboys and others. Then there is great Team Clearmont show at Flaming Cantina which also has the Pipettes and Architecture In Helsinki as well as Gruff Rhys ( Super Furry Animals). But my plan b is The High Wire show at Habana Calle – The Frames, Get Caoe, Wear Cape, Fly, The Boggs, the wonderful Daniel Johnston and my tip as the stars of the week – The Diableros. You cant fail to have a great Thursday afternoon…….and Friday is even better….
pipettes are doing a number of day parties- means at least three attempts to catch them, tokyo police club love them but already seen them twice in the past 6 months and have another gig end of march so no biggie for me.
I’ve just spent a week going through every band that is playings MySpace page as i don’t want to come from the UK and waste my money seeing bands i’ve heard before and i’m most excited about Imaginary Icons,Peel,Asobi Seksu and the incredible Chinese band Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues.
The beauty bar is co owned by Jason Reece from ..and you will know us by the trail of the dead. There back patio will fit 200 people mabye. We had trouble getting in last year untill I started dropping names. Very hip after party spot.
Mark that is why SXSW is a different buzz for different folks. I will bust my butt to see UK bands who only hit NY and LA and where it would cost me at least $500 to get to see them, and avoid US bands who appear every other week in the local music club. Most folk have their own very varied agenda which means unless you are only a true sheep wanting to only see established bands you will see new bands which are killer. I realised yesterday my top four bands from last year are not coming this year forcing me to expand into smaller bands. And dont even get me into the jealousy of my uk friends who get to see long blondes, pigeons and cribs every other week this spring, I have to just get over it and expand those ears!
Then there’s the “walk around” factor. Some of my best SXSW experiences have come purely by serendipity. If there’s nothing I’m salivating to see, I just wander 6th St or Red River and follow my nose. Often times, I end up in a near empty room to discover some obscure band with no following tearing the roof off the joint.
Hell, I’ll sometimes check out a band just ’cause I like their name, or where they’re from (I’ve almost never been let down by a band from Japan or Sweden).
If you’re coming this year as a first-timer, I can’t stress enough how vital it is not to be over-scheduled or to flip out if you can’t get into see one of the bands on your list. Be flexible — there’s always something amazing to discover around the next corner.
Going to be a first-timer this year (to SXSW anyway, been to Austin a few times for recreational purposes outside of all this hoo-ha) – I’m totally hyperventilating at all this. Okay, calm down.
Anyways, I’m coming over from Scotland – so my Scotland / UK two pfenigs consists of:
– Emma Pollock – ex-Delgados, uber-good
– Popup – as above, although if anyone understands more than one word in fifteen I’ll be impresed. I live in Scotland and they baffle me
– Jack Penate – a bit Jam, a bit Housemartins, totally ace and not up against much else on the night
– Hot Club de Paris – Yes, please.
– Lethal Bizzle – UK grime. Worth it just to hear Pow!
Oh, and Jamie T, whose live band show is a country mile away from his recorded stuff – waaay less pop.
Hey Alex, I am travelling from Orkney to SXSW. I went last year and you have every rtight to be hyperventialting – it is better than you can ever imagine. Have you got an invite for teh Scottish arts showcase at Lava Lounge? Email them and say you are going over from Scotland and they will put your name at the door.
Might see you there.
Unknown bands that have to be seen include Rock Plaza Central and Mother,Mother from Canada, OFFICE from Chicago, Zykos – a hometown Austin band and the amazing About from Holland. Forget all the names you already know. Try picking the groups that will take teh world by storm over the next few years.

Pigeon Detectives ARE amazing. I can’t wait to finally see them.

Don’t hate on Room 710 – they’re the only place in town where you can still smoke almost anything without getting thrown out…
plus anyone who plays in a loud rock band in Austin will tell you 710 has some of the best sound in town.

The hottest band in Austin playing SXSW is The Mother Truckers. Do yourself a favor and ask somebody who has seen them play.
EVERYONE I have ever talked to is impressed and an immediate fan.
