Over on Weird Al’s website, he wrote something that makes no sense to me.
Tim Sloane of Ijamsville, MD asks: Al, which of these purchasing methods should I use in order to make sure the most profit gets to you: Buying one of your albums on CD, or buying one of your albums on iTunes?
I am extremely grateful for your support, no matter which format you choose to legally obtain my music in, so you should do whatever makes the most sense for you personally. But since you ASKED… I actually do get significantly more money from CD sales, as opposed to downloads. This is the one thing about my renegotiated record contract that never made much sense to me. It costs the label NOTHING for somebody to download an album (no manufacturing costs, shipping, or really any overhead of any kind) and yet the artist (me) winds up making less from it. Go figure.
Seems to be an absolute crappy deal, but who knows. Anyone care to shed any light into this?
Weird Al isn’t the only one. Cheap Trick is pursuing legal action against their label (Sony? somebody Google that) regarding contract wording that allows the labels to extract fees for “packaging” and such when an MP3 is sold. Obviously, Cheap Trick and their management were smart enough to realize there is no packaging when it comes to an MP3, but I don’t know how many other bands currently or formerly on labels who had this in their out-of-date contract actually realize they’re getting screwed.
A better solution for these bands would be to set up a PayPal account where you can just donate money, and then download their albums for free on whatever p2p client you like :) Hell, even if you gave them $5 an album, they’d come out way ahead.
who is buying wierd al and cheap trick?
