Last Night in Columbus: South, Editors, Lucero, The Sword

First off, anyone who complains and says nothing goes on in Columbus OH can fuck themselves. Okay, with that out of the way…

Last night started at the Newport Music Hall with South and Editors. South were good enough, but I realized that after each song had played I had forgotten what I had heard. It’s kind of like when you would read books for homework – you’d read 10 chapters and go, “What the hell is going on?” That’s South. Competant, non offensive yet totally forgettable.

Editors came on next and I was totally impressed. For a young band, they put on a great live show. Completely polished and completely radio friendly with a light show, I know, but it works. I really liked the slower songs, and I’m a sucker for that “Munich” single.

We didn’t stay for Stellastarr* – I’ve seen them twice already and that’s enough.

(Real quick – The first time I saw them was when they opened for the Raveonettes. The drummer took his shirt off and had electrical tape that made the asterick * over his nipple. I thought that was kinda cheese ball).

After Editors/South it was time to head off to Little Brother’s for Lucero, a band I had last seen two years ago at SXSW. This was a fun show, but I expected a little more energy from the band. They played one of my favorite songs, “That Much Further West” and a sweet cover of “Dirty Old Town.” Having someone light off firecrackers during the set was fun, too.

It was time for my final stop for the night – the High Five to see The Sword. Do you know about this band? Rolling Stone said they ruled SXSW. They’re a ton of fun to watch live. Think Black Sabbath or Early Man, depending on your point of reference.

Oh yeah, the High Five was sweating dude sweat. You know it’s a good show when that place steams up.
