Ok, I’ve never been to SXSW and am getting conflicting info. Can I show up at a venue an hour before the first performer takes the stage and get tix, or not?
I’ve been doing this thing for years and unless you have a badge or a wristband and show up early- good luck. It is a tedious waste of time to try to get into any big shows or “up and coming” bands. First, you get into a line that looks hopeful. Then the bouncer calls out “single file” or some other bullshit, by which point you are either having to go to the bathroom or are super thirsty. Then, next, a bunch of assholes with receding hairlines and paunches and hipper than thou looks glide past with all-important badges on tacky lanyards and go right on in. Locals and poor folk still in line. Finally, bouncer announces there is another line openning for wristbands and those with nothing but tired feet should back the fuck up. Then it looks full, your buzz is dead, and you give up and go to a free show at some art space.
don’t sweat the horror stories. you will get into great shows, even without a badge or wristband. definitely checkout the free shit b/c it is free obviously and often more fun than the showcases. seriously. other than that peice of advice, i offer the following: over the last few years i have seen spoon, broken social scene, big star, gourds, clinic, gvsb, quasi, gingersol, mary lou lord, ted leo, neko case, bobby bare jr, waco bros, cat power, yo la, robyn hitchcock, old 97s, tons others, all w/o a badge, most w/o a wristband. just be flexible, and don’t wait in any lines. there’s too much good music to waste time standing in any line ever. you will not get into arctic monkeys, but most likely you will get into morrissey if you get there early. just wherever you go, have a back up plan or two and hit that if you see a line. but don’t try to see trail of dead, because i’m trying to get into that show! ;)
I’m going to see Man Man at 11:15 at the Velvet Spade. Does anyone think it will be even remotely possible to then see Mates of State at the Parish at midnight AND Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at Eternal at 1:00? I have a wristband. Any suggestions?
My life’s been generally bland today. I just don’t have anything to say recently. I guess it doesn’t bother me. Basically nothing seems worth doing, but I don’t care.

HELP!
Depends on who the act is. For some acts, showing up two or three hours early won’t do you any good.

I’ve just been letting everything pass me by. Shrug. Basically not much notable going on lately.
