Metallica’s St. Anger gave up two calendar days in sales time and still will debut as #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. how much did they sell? the numbers should be available next week, but they doubled the sales total of the #2 album, Jewel’s sex-a-liciously covered 0304.
what do i think? glad you asked! i bought St. Anger on release day and while i think there is probably not another band who is giving their fans more “bang for the buck” than Metallica, it is not an easy album to listen to when compared to their previous works. i spent all weekend listening to Ride the Lightening, Master of Puppets and …And Justice for All and i can calmly say that St. Anger does not top any of these three Metallica staples. many of the songs on St. Anger have some weird tempo stuff going on and Hetfield seems to have tried to develop a singing voice, which sometimes is painful to hear. having said that, for the $9.99 i spent, i got the CD, CD booklet with sing-a-longs (lyrics), a DVD with footage of every song recorded on the album, plus access to MetallicaVault.com, where i downloaded live shows from 1994, 1996, and 1998. i dare someone to say they got more value for $10 in the last 5 years. just try.
