RIAA Sues Students

As if college kids didn’t have enough to worry about.

stereophile.com reports:

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed copyright-infringement lawsuits against four college students, accusing them of using their colleges’ computer networks to distribute millions of copyrighted songs.

Watcha gonna do when they come for you?

Satellite Radio Crashing?

With steep financial hurdles, both Sirius and XM Satellite Radio seem to be having trouble getting people to listen.

Barry Willis, for Stereophile.com, reports:

The nascent satellite radio industry has entered a critical phase, with both XM Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio posting losses for the fourth quarter. Combined, the two companies have yet to sign up a half-million subscribers.

Live in NYC via KEXP

KEXP brings you John Richards, with his excellent John in the Morning Show. All this week, he will be broadcasting live from the Museum of Television and Radio.

Or is it Radio and Television?

The Miracle of 86 performed live this morning. They were good, but I swear they’ve picked up a chord progression or two from Darien. Staten Island in the hizouse.

Tomorrow, be sure to catch The Damnwells.

Listen.

Madonna Pulls Anti-War Video

Hmm, I don’t remember Madonna ever being concerned about offending anyone, but ABC News has just reported this:

“I have written a song and created a video which expresses my feelings about our culture and values, and the illusions of what many people believe is the American dream, the perfect life,” Madonna said before her decision to pull the video in the United States.”

Get the scoop here. And here.

I told Duffy just yesterday that I can’t hold onto a steady opinion about this war for more than ten minutes, so I can understand where Madonna is coming from. It’s a tough call.

Also, oddly enough, Dick Tracy was on HBO this morning. And, yeah, she was HOT.

No dates scheduled in Columbus. Sorry folks. But, of course, they will be making a stop in Cleveland. What are we going to do about this?

Nocturama Dates

Crikey! Has anyone posted these yet?

Here are the tourdates for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, in support of their album “Nocturama,” which I have been listening to nonstop for the past two days.

June 16 – San Francisco, CA / The Warfield
June 17 – San Francisco, CA / The Warfield
June 18 – Los Angeles, CA / Hollywood Palladium (All Tomorrow’s Parties)
June 21 – Chicago, IL / Chicago Theatre
June 22 – Toronto, ON / Kool Haus
June 24 – New York, NY / Roseland
June 25 – New York, NY / Roseland

Ay dios mio, only seven shows here in the States?! Fuck me. And after I was nearly crushed at a Sonic Youth concert years ago, I’d vowed to never step foot inside that deathpit, Roseland, ever again. I may have to go back on my word. But probably not.

Watermarked CDs?

Jon Iverson, for stereophile.com, reports:

Stealth MediaLabs announced last week that SunnComm has agreed to license its “StealthChannel” technology, designed to utilize a “hidden and virtually indestructible ‘metaspace'” within compact discs. The companies say this will allow for a persistent watermark to be embedded in SunnComm’s MediaMax music CD releases.

In an effort to add a little sugar to the bitter watermark pill, the companies say that as a by-product of their approach, StealthChannel can also enable delivery of new, “MTV-like” multimedia and e-commerce features, permanently embedded into music and movies. They add that the StealthChannel is designed to survive digital and analog copying when content ends up on the Web or is dropped into portable media.
