RIAA attacks more college students

Tomorrow the RIAA plans on filing 400+ lawsuits against college students for “illegally” sharing files over Internet2. From the histrionic press release

A total of 405 lawsuits will be filed tomorrow against students at Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Drexel University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Michigan State University, New York University, Ohio State University, Princeton University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of California ? Berkeley, University of California ? San Diego, University of Massachusetts ? Amherst, University of Pittsburgh and University of Southern California.

Statistics (of dubious veracity) are given:

Combined, the students being sued have illegally distributed more than 1.5 million total files, including more than 930,000 songs.

Elton John loses mind, says Eminem is a ‘Hendrix’

Found this online:

Elton John says that Eminem is on par with Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, the rapper is listed in the magazine’s second “Immortals” edition, featuring another 50 of the greatest figures of rock ‘n’ roll with appreciations written by other artists. In his immortalizing of Eminem, John writes that he got goose bumps when he first rehearsed with him for their performance at the 2001 Grammy Awards.

“From the start, I’ve always admired Eminem’s thinking,” John writes. “That’s the reason I wanted to appear on the Grammys with him when I was asked, despite all the nonsense talked about his being homophobic.

“Let the Boy Georges and the George Michaels of the world get up in a twist about it if they don’t have the intelligence to see his intelligence.”

Other contributors include Dave Matthews writing on Radiohead, Trey Anastasio on Frank Zappa, Beck on Hank Williams, David Bowie on Nine Inch Nails and Mos Def on Miles Davis.

The original top 50 “Immortals” were listed by Rolling Stone in 2004. Topping the ranks were the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley.

Better The Devil You Know

Is it a good thing when a US media behemoth strengthens its footholds in the UK entertainment industry? I’m tending towards no.

“Mean Fiddler, the music festival and concert organiser behind the Reading and Leeds festivals, is being taken over in a ?38m deal by a group of investors that includes the UK division of the world’s largest concert promoter.

The company, which has a 39% interest in the Glastonbury festival, said last night it was backing an offer from a privately owned outfit controlled by the US entertainment group Clear Channel and the Irish music promoter Denis Desmond.”

Wilco Redux

The BBC World Service has a piece with Jeff Tweedy where he talks about releasing artefacts, how home taping was going to kill music, and that the internet is “Just new technology, and it’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Now that’s just crazy talk.

Doug Gillard

It warmed our hearts to see Doug Gillard get the cover story of the Cleveland Scene this week. The article will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about Mr. Gillard but were afraid to ask.
