Press for the Donewaiting.com Album

Tonight’s our show. Holy crap. Here’s some reviews of the album.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

The Columbus music Web site www.donewaiting.com will expand its empire by releasing its first album of original music, a joint effort by Columbus bands Tiara and Miranda Sound.

The site is an indie-music fan?s mother lode, with news, rants, music downloads, message-board chatter and scene reports from contributors around the globe.

The highlight of Donewaiting.com Vol. 1, Tiara vs. Miranda Sound (500 copies on vinyl, which comes with a CD as well) comes from Tiara, which has hit an engaging stride of late. The group?s bouncy, indie
stomp recalls an updated Zombies or a noisier Morrissey.

From The Other Paper:

Donewaiting.com webmaster Robert Duffy has been accused of playing
favorites. He didn?t exactly squash those rumors when he decided to make the website’s first CD release a split between Tiara and MS.

But if you’re going to play favorites, you could do a lot worse.

Miranda Sound plays its usual quirky indie rock. The best of its four songs is “Lines Were Drawn,” which features varying dynamics, simple guitar lines and plenty of harmonized vocals.

While the verses of “My Surname’s an Airplane” are built around a piano line, the guitars come in for the choruses. The song really gets going after the breakdown. That’s when a lead guitar line slowly builds tension before releasing it for the big finish.

Tiara goes for more of a repetitive, drone-y feel. “Someone is Listening” might rip off the chord changes from John Lennon’s “Merry Christmas (War is Over)”, but it more than makes up for it with its simplistic
beauty.

The Elliott Smith penned (but never released) “Flowers for Charlie” is a sad ending because of Smith’s 2003death. But it’s a nice touch because the singer-songwriter obviously influenced both bands’.

The album’s eight songs do take a while to grow on you. But once you find yourself singing the chorus s in the shower – and you will – you’ll realize thepower of a good song.

Robert Duffy sure does.

And finally, from Columbus Alive:

This weekend Donewaiting.com turns two years old, which must, like dogs and cats, equate to something greater in human years, given the rate at which websites come and go in the digital age.

The locally based website was started by Robert Duffy when he moved to Columbus and has fast replaced older sites like Columbusmusic.com and Cringe.com as the place music geeks go to battle wits on message boards. While a good deal of the site is devoted to local coverage, there are sections focusing on and run by contributing writers from places as far away as London and Los Angeles.

To mark the site?s birthday, Duffy is releasing a record of split-sides from Miranda Sound and Tiara, each of whom contribute four songs. Five hundred copies are being pressed, 100 of which will be on white vinyl, with screen-printed covers featuring artwork by Clint Reno, known for designing the Donewaiting logo and concert posters. CDs will be included for those reliant on the inferior format.

As usual, more information on the album can be found here.

Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!

It’s upon us. The Donewaiting.com album release event. I hope you’re there.

More on Eyes For The Prize

Some interesting developments in Downhill Battle’s Eyes On The Prize action. Boing Boing notes this entry on the Downhill Battle Blog—

The teacher who was planning a February 8th screening of Eyes on the Prize in Vienna, VA for students and community members has been forced to cancel after a threat of lawsuit from the “licensee level”. We absolutely cannot believe this – we had never anticipated that anyone would try to stop students and community members from watching a film about the Civil Rights Movement. Apparently, the law firm that contacted them says that the school district does not have the proper licenses. This is really unbelievable– if there is any fair use, free speech right at all, it applies to screenings of a historical documentary in a school (wikipedia on fair use). This is a public screening in an educational, non-commercial, one-time use setting. Messing with a school district in Virginia is a whole different ballgame, don’t you think?

Another side of the argument, laid out here by the nephew of Henry Hampton, the filmmaker, notes some damaging side effects to DB’s actions regarding the film.

Also of note is this study, Untold Stories: Creative Consequences of the Rights Clearance Culture for Documentary Filmmakers By Pat Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi, which,

explores the implications of the current terms of rights acquisition on the creative process of documentary filmmaking in today’s marketplace, and from them makes recommendations to lower costs and promote creativity. It focuses on the lived experience of independent documentary filmmakers who work primarily within a broadcast environment (sometimes with a theatrical ?window?), in coping with the creative challenges created by acquiring and granting rights.

News on the Third Malkmus Disc

From Matador:

On May 23, Matador will be releasing the 3rd post-Pavement album from Stephen Malkmus, ‘Face The Truth’, on the every popular compact disc and phonograph long player configurations. ‘Face The Truth’, Stephen’s first bona fide solo recording, captures our favorite singer-songwriter at the height of his creative powers. We can say with total confidence that some of SM’s wittiest moments to date are found on this album, along with many of his most heartfelt. An album of staggering lyrical and musical range, ‘Face The Truth’ is unlikey to be supported by heavy touring (what with Stephen’s pending dad-to-be status), but selected US dates are planned, along with a headlining appearance at Matador’s SXSW event (March 18, The Parish, Austin).

KILLIONAIRES! MP3!

They have no website. They have no mailing lists. They’re not on Myspace.

But they do have an MP3 for your listening pleasure: Human Antenna

I would imagine that the people living in dark, murky swamps (by choice) would love this song. And you.

Killionaires features Jon Chinn and members of Murder Your Darlings and Evil Queens. They’ll be playing the donewaiting.com album release show 2/5/05 @ Little Brother’s.

The Most Expensive Animated Musical Ever?

No way you could spend this much money for an animated remake of The Who’s “Tommy”:

GREASE producer Robert Stigwood should never, I repeat NEVER, be allowed within a hundred miles of an animation studio. He’s planning to remake the Who’s 1975 rock-opera feature TOMMY into an animated film, which is fine, but he wants to spend $400 million to do it. Is it even possible to spend $400 million on an animated film? What are they going to do: produce it five times in a row and then pick the best version? (full story)

Does the world need a remake of the “Tommy”, animated or otherwise?

No, no we don’t.

Kaiser Chiefs Annoyance

So I Tivo’d MTV’s “Subterranean” show, which is sort of not really actually REALLY not really but it’s the closest thing to “120 Minutes” show..

Kaiser Chefs are on, and I gotta think, do we need another fucking band that sounds like this? That dresses like that? That so neatly fits into this little genre

Answer: no.

Please go away.
