The Whigs Once More

On Monday, Summer’s Kiss reported that 3/4 of the Afghan Whigs line-up will gather in the studio once the current Twilight Singers tour has completed with the intention of recording four brand new tracks for Rhino’s oft-delayed “best of” compilation. No word yet on any further Whigs activity (tours, albums, etc.), and breath-holding won’t be encouraged by the staff of Donewaiting.

The End of WOXY.com

Their last day of broadcasting will be September 15 unless someone comes along and buys them. I know the donewaiting.com demographic averages around $1M income, so make it happen pronto.

Read about it on their site.

Um, this is not the Primal Scream I was promised.

Did anyone else buy the American version of Primal Scream’s Riot City Blues, only to find the bonus track listed on the back of the CD case, “Stone Ya To The Bone”, replaced by a shitty live version of “Country Girl”?

I am more than a little pissed.

Stream “Idlewild,” New Album by Outkast

Remember when people were insane over “Hey Ya!”? Seems like a world away..

Anyway, you can stream the whole album over here or order it on the cheap at Amazon.com.

Village Voice Says: “As for Andre’s parts, they’re worse than I could’ve ever imagined. He’s really gone off the deep end, ditching anything resembling coherence.”

New York Time Says: “Although André 3000 and Big Boi can multitask brilliantly within their songs, on “Idlewild” it sounds like making the movie distracted OutKast from making the album.”

Pitchfork Says: “People who hate on Outkast haters get a lot of mileage out of the fallacy that people dislike the idea of two men attempting to poke day-glo exclamation points through the restrictive language of 21st century rap. Mostly I’m hating on the unfortunate degeneration of one of my favorite acts of all time. Even having to write a semi-negative Outkast review is sad for me. Frankly, I’d rather remove chunks of my forearms with a melon baller.”

New issue of Wired features the future of music + Pitchfork article

Imagine my surprise when I opened the September copy of Wired (cover shot of Beck) — there’s a big article on indie music site Pitchfork. It basically talks about how the site helped the career of Broken Social Scene, among others, and destroyed Travis Morrison’s solo debut. It’s not a bad article, actually.

There are also articles on various ways musicians and labels are planning to distribute new music to consumers. The Barenaked Ladies, whose management is Nettwerk, plan to release their album in the ProTools format — actually, more than 200 formats (45 of which, the article indicates, will be distributed via a small USB drive).

Also, Beck plans to again let his new album’s songs be available for fans and other musicians to diddle with at will.

It will be interesting to watch how things like this affect the future of music and how it is distributed.
