Donewaiting.com Houston Showcase Monday

David has done great work with his Houston Calling column for donewaiting.com, making Houston one of the biggest cities that come to the site on a regular basis.

This is the first show he’s ever booked, so all you fine people in Houston need to go to this and give David a kiss.

Lily Allen: Critical Bust vs. Motostereoing Pleasure

We at donewaiting are so far ahead of the curve it hurts. The below appeared on the site here over a month ago, but it sort of got buried in the redesign. Anyway, in light of Pitchfork’s review that appeared today I reckon this might be worth a look.

Okay, I was listening to Lily Allen’s debut and thinking to myself, “Man-o-man, Tankboy, if this isn’t great summer music I don’t know what is.” Then I thought about it some more. Stereogum turned me on to a couple of her demos a while ago, and the bloggerrati commenced the full-on freak-out. She was touted as a female Mike Skinner or something. Now that I’ve digested the whole album, though, I would say that she is actually more like Len with her reggae-lite beats and mockney accent.

LillyAllen.jpgThis doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the disc…but then again I also like Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, and any other number of female popsters. It’s amusing to me that crit-types are all agog over an artist who is really no different than most of the stuff they slam on a pretty consistent basis.

This is the problem with “everyone” being a critic. Pronouncements are made without further review and things get totally out of hand. (Ref: tapes ‘n tapes for further evidence of the backlash that invariably ensues. Ref also: CYHSY, although this is not as strong since my own personal backlash with this group occurred before the tidal wave of acclaim came their way and ruined The National’s tour.) Having an opinion is not the same as having a critical viewpoint. It just isn’t.

So from a critical viewpoint I have to say Lily Allen’s album is primarily a fluff-filled affair that gets by on sheer cheek and wit. If anything, that wit is the only thing that really keeps her from being a full-on novelty though it doesn’t save her from the unavoidable quick trip to the cut-out bin a few months down the line.

My own personal opinion though? It’s a fuck-load of fun to listen to and will surely see much play in my car stereo with all four windows rolled way down.

Music Stores Are For Aging Dudes, Says New York Times

Interesting article in the New York Times today about the decline of the brick and mortar music store.

Two quotes:

Since late 2003, about 900 independent record stores have closed nationwide, leaving about 2,700, according to the Almighty Institute of Music Retail, a marketing research company in Studio City, Calif. In 2004, Tower Records, one of the nation’s largest chains, filed for bankruptcy protection.

Some independent owners are resisting the demographic challenges. Eric Levin, 36, who owns three Criminal Records stores in Atlanta and oversees a trade group called the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, representing 30 shops nationally, said that businesses losing young customers are “dinosaurs” that have done nothing to cater to the new generation. Around the country, he said, shops like Grimey’s in Nashville, Shake It Records in Cincinnati and Other Music in New York are hanging on to young customers by evolving into one-stop hipster emporiums. Besides selling obscure CD’s and even vinyl records, many have diversified into comic books, Japanese robot toys and clothing. Some have opened adjoining nightclubs or, in Mr. Levin’s case, coffee shops. (full story)

Spread Eagle to tour this summer

In the Donewaiting universe, this story might be an indication of a slow news day. But in my universe this is some of the biggest news I’ve heard in years. NYC sleeze rockers Spread Eagle are reuniting (though, by all accounts, “reuniting” may just mean 2 members getting back together) to tour this summer. No dates have been announced yet but here’s at least one person (me) hoping for at least one Ohio date.

If you’re unfamiliar with Spread Eagle, take a look at this …
