Cincy’s Alchemize is Closing; Spencer to Open New Club

From his blog:

That’s it. The end of a chapter in life, I guess.

alchemize is officially closed. Period. This weekend’s shows will be moved to Cooper’s on Main.

Why? Couple reasons.

Number one, due to the overwhelmingly positive response we have gotten to our announcement about moving, we are pushing forward with opening a new project in Covington.

Because we need to move VERY quickly on that, it soon became clear that we couldn’t continue operations in the current space. From a logistical, financial, and legal standpoint, leaving now was the best option out there.

Dirty on Purpose Columbus Contenst / Download Entire Live Show

Dirty on Purpose is one of our favorite bands, and we’re happy they’re coming back to Columbus on Tuesday @ Andyman’s Treehouse.

We have a pair of tickets to give away for that show, as well as a copy of their new album. E-mail contest(@)donewaiting.com by midnight tonight and we’ll randomly chose a winner.

MP3: Light Pollution

LIVE MP3 BONUS: Last year, the band played a donewaiting.com showcase in Boston for the NEMO Music Festival. You can download that entire show here.

Here’s what Chip wrote about the show on weColumbus:

If you’re looking to determine how much buzz a band has, look no further than the size of a crowd at a band’s SXSW showcase. In 2005, Brooklyn-based Dirty on Purpose filled the venue they were playing in Austin with a large number of music bloggers (myself included) and put out a mesmerizing shoegazing performance. While the distorted and fuzzy guitars do pay homage (a bit) to My Bloody Valentine, the band’s overall sound is more akin to Stateside noisemakers Yo La Tengo. The band’s 2005 EP, Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow, hinted at the band’s potential while the band’s latest, the debut full-length Hallelujah Sirens (North Street Records), completely blows the covers off.

Survivor announces new singer

Come on, don’t say that you didn’t even realize Survivor was still together! The band best known for their Rocky III theme song “Eye of the Tiger” recently announced that they’ve parted ways with Jim Jamison who fronted the band since 1984.

Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan says, ““When we made the decision to replace Jamison, I had no idea what we would do. Then it hit me–Robin McAuley! Is he available? How can he possibly be available?! Can I be lucky yet again in my career to work with such a talented singer? Well, the short answer, he was available, we gave him the songs of a set list we would perform, he came to the Windy City and blew our socks off!”

McAuley spent the late ’80s/early ’90s fronting the McAuley-Schneker Group (MSG) who had such notable hits as “Anytime” and “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow”.

The band is currently in the studio working on an album they hope to release in early 2007.

McAuley-Schenker’s “Anytime” video:

Weezer done?

Rivers Cuomo says, “I’m not certain we’ll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one.” The recent Harvard graduate has made statements like this before and Weezer has been known to take quite a bit of time between studio recordings (5 years between Pinkerton and the Green Album) so Weezer fans will just have to hold their breaths and wait and see.

Columbus OH Music Picks: July 13-19

Tim Easton, Dirty on Purpose and Teeth of the Hydra are some show previews we’ve written up on donewaiting.com sister site, weColumbus. Check it out!

Should be a great week for music, and we didn’t even include a write up about the Gathering of the Juggalos happening 20 miles outside of town. OH YES BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

MP3: Terribly Empty Pockets

Columbus’ Terribly Empty Pockets make the kind of pop to put a smile on anyone’s face during any sort of rainy day (like we’re having over here right now).

After what seems to be months (years?) of anticipation, the the band will be releasing their first EP, “Get Wet,” nationally next month. In the meantime, check out a song from the record:

MP3: Boy’s Club

I imagine if this band starts touring out of town they’re gonna make a lot of fans real quick.

New Golden Smog MP3

Joe over at Each Note Secure has posted a song from the new Golden Smog album. As mentioned yesterday, I’m really looking forward to this record. I hope it rules.

If you don’t know, Golden Smog is Gary Louris, Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum) and Jeff Tweedy (Wilco).

Also, congrats to Joe for his redesign of the site.

The Submarines Ticket Giveaway!

The Submarines are the LA-based, husband & wife duo of John Dragonetti (Jack Drag) and Blake Hazard. They make lush, dynamic, dreamy, sometimes happy, and sometimes sad music together. They were a couple, then they weren’t a couple, then they wrote songs about NOT being a couple, then they recorded those songs (which became their debut album, Declare a New State!), and now they’re married. Crazy, huh?!?

I have happened upon two (2) tickets to their Monday, July 17th show at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. First person to email me (spangley@gmail.com) gets both. Why? Because I’m a giver, I give.

Even if you don’t win tickets, you should still come check out the show, which also includes sets by fellow Angelenos Bedroom Walls and Let’s Go Sailing. C’mon, all the cool kids are doing it…and me too. Heh. Doors at 8:00 pm. Show at 9:00 pm.

You can also feast your ears upon the Submarines track “Peace & Hate” here. Word.

Two New Mountain Goats MP3

Matt at You Aint No Picasso has two mp3s from the new album by the Mountain Goats.

I can’t wait to see this band at the Pitchfork event.
