Radiohead Mulls Independent Release

In this interview with Yorke, he discusses the possibility of releasing the next album on their own.

Asked whether Radiohead would consider distributing its next album independently, Yorke unhesitatingly said yes. “We have two or three options, and that’s one,” he said. “Once we finish whatever we think is good enough to put out, then we’ll start thinking about it. We haven’t discussed it a great deal. I would love for us to drop a chemical weapon within the music industry. But I don’t see it as our responsibility, either.” (full story)

There was similar talk awhile back when Pearl Jam ended their major label contract. In the end, they signed to a different major.

The Thing About Final Fantasy

I caught Final Fantasy last night in Columbus OH. He was really good. He might have even been GREAT. But dang, it’s hard to shake that Andrew Bird comparison from my head.

Granted, the only thing the two have in common is the way they sample their violins, creating a beautiful wall of sound, but that’s a pretty big thing. Their lyrical content is different, their music styles are different, Bird also plays a guitar, there’s lots of other big differences. But still, it was dancing around in the back of my set while I saw them.

Loved the show, though. Sad that I missed openers The Black Swans.

Invitation to Vox?

Anyone have an invitation to Vox they’d like to send me? rduffy AT gmail DOT com! if you do….

Thanks, Steve.

Review: Rogue Wave in Bloomington

Rogue Wave
Landlocked Records
Bloomington, Indiana, 24 June 2006

Just a day before their stop at the Desdemona Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio, Rogue Wave treated a sizeable, and diverse audience in Bloomington to an intimate and enjoyable acoustic performance.

The band invited the audience to sit and relax, creating a mellow, story-time atmosphere that lent itself tremendously to the band’s sound – which rests somewhere between Simon and Garfunkel, The Shins, Neutral Milk Hotel and Sufjan Stevens. Ranging in age from six and 3/7 (the band asked) to around 40, the audience called out their favorites from Out Of The Shadows, Descend Like Vultures, and laughed at the band’s humorous banter.

Review: Warped Tour in Columbus

This year marked my sixth (though not sixth consecutive) trip to Kevin Lyman’s Warped Tour. In its twelfth year, I expected the day to closely follow the format of past outings – kids with funny haircuts, piercing and tattoos getting dehydrated and sunburned while taking in all manner of musical act and extreme athlete. That is exactly what I saw.

Hellogoodbye, a favorite of last season’s MTV Real World cast, goofed their way through a very theatrical, though not tremendously musical performance. Bassist Marcus Cole and keyboardist Jesse Kurvink, who were dressed as mustard and Pinocchio respectively (I think), blasted their young and enthusiastic crowd with silly string repeatedly though they barely touched their instruments for minutes at a time. Singer Forrest Kline, who was dressed like a senior citizen sang, “What is love/Baby don’t hurt me/Don’t hurt me, no more,” through a “talk box” along with the pre-programmed beats. I might have been more impressed had I never seen or heard Reggie And The Full Effect, and perhaps many of the younger attendees in their audience hadn’t. While their performance was affable, it wasn’t one of the day’s best.

Sleater-Kinney Breaking Up

WTF!!! From their website:

After eleven years as a band, Sleater-Kinney have decided to go on indefinite hiatus. The upcoming summer shows will be our last. As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings.

We feel lucky to have had the support of many wonderful people over the years. We want to thank everyone who has worked with us, written kind words about us, performed with us, and inspired us.

But mostly we want to extend our gratitude to our amazing fans. You have been a part of our story from the beginning. We could not have made our music without your enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty. It is you who have made the entire journey worthwhile.

With love and thanks,
Sleater-Kinney
