Springsteen at New Orleans Jazz Festival

“I saw sights I never thought I’d see in an American city,” he said before one song. “The criminal ineptitude makes you furious.”

He dedicated the song, How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live, to “President Bystander”.

Afterwards his rendition of We Shall Overcome reduced some of the audience to tears and hugs, as did a moving version of My Oklahoma Home, a song that echoes the plight of New Orleans in its portrayal of the dust storms in Oklahoma in the 1930s. (continued)

iTunes to Remain 99 cents (For Now)

Apple Computer on Monday revealed it had renewed contracts with the four largest record companies to sell songs through its iTunes digital store at 99 cents each. The agreements came after months of bargaining, and were a defeat for music companies that had been pushing for a variable pricing model. (continued)

I think this is a good idea. People aren’t ready for variable pricing yet.

Listen: Neil Young’s “Living With War”

livingwar.jpg

The album will be available for a digital download on Tuesday but you can stream the entire thing right here, right now.

“Living With War is a fierce, comprehensive indictment of the Bush administration and all its failures, but it doesn’t feel like an outsider’s dissent,” wrote one reviewer, in the singer’s native Canada. “It’s the work of someone who clearly identifies with the core values of ordinary middle Americans who voted for Bush.” (continued)

After you give it a listen, post up reviews in the comments.

PJ Harvey Live DVD

pjdvd.jpg

PJ Harvey is one of my favorite musicians, although I haven’t given her last album the proper attention it deserved. Somehow it slipped through the cracks….. I need to fix that.

Anyway, she’s got a new live DVD coming out next week. Her live show melts the hearts of men and the faces of women, so it should be a good’un.

You can watch a video preview here or pre-order it on Amazon.com.

DJ Shadow Signs to Universal Records

Yeah, I love posting press releases this week I guess.

(New York, NY) Universal Records has signed acclaimed hip hop stylist DJ Shadow, who is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album scheduled to be released later this summer. “I’m thrilled to join the team at Universal. Finally, after years of feeling like an orphan I feel like I finally have a home,” says DJ Shadow (Josh Davis.) “As someone who has been a fan of DJ Shadow for the past 10 years, it’s an honor to have him join the Universal Motown family. We are delighted that Josh feels comfortable enough with us to allow us to be his partner, and we are incredibly excited for the launch of his new album this summer,” countered Universal Motown Records General Manager, Andrew Kronfeld. Known for his experimental blend of styles and hip hop-tinged production innovation, the new solo disc will be Shadow’s third full length album, but the first to be produced under his own name featuring guest vocalists.
