The Flaming Lips New Video, on Letterman

The Flaming Lips remind me of Tim Burton. Not because they both do some weird stuff, but because both The Flaming Lips and Burton have managed to have really successful careers working inside the major label (and major studio) world without giving up any of their artistic vision or integrity. All of Burton’s films have been major studio releases, believe it or not, as has the last few Lips records. It’s good to see some people can make it work to their advantage.

Anyway, you can stream the entire new album on their website. I love it, but you knew that already.

Here’s two videos. First from their Letterman appearance the other night and the second is the splendidly twisted video for the “Yeah Yeah Yeah” Song.

The Replacements Reunite

From Billboard.com:

As tipped yesterday (March 28) on Billboard’s Jaded Insider blog, Replacements members Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars have reunited to record two new songs for an upcoming retrospective, “Don’t You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements.” Due June 13 via Rhino, the set will feature “Message to the Boys” and “Pool & Dive,” the band’s first new recordings in 16 years.

Session drummer Josh Freese was behind the kit for the new recordings, while Mars, who in recent years has foregone music for an art career, contributed backing vocals. The songs were written by Westerberg and were recorded at producer Ed Ackerson’s Flowers studio in Minneapolis. At deadline, it is unclear if any further activity is brewing within the Replacements’ camp. [more]

YouTube Limits Videos to Ten Minutes

Lost Remote points out that YouTube is now limiting videos to ten minutes because the majority of videos longer than ten minutes were copywright violations.

I can think of a ton of uses for YouTube that extend longer than ten minutes, so this is a sad thing to read. Luckily, the internet is fast and nimble and a replacement site will surely pop up this week.

Miranda Sound: The Second Release on the Donewaiting.com Record Label

Sunken Treasure Records is the donewaiting.com record label that was established in September of 2005. Our second release is “Western Reserve” by Miranda Sound. The album was produced by J Robbins of Jawbox and mixed by TJ Lipple of Aloha. Pretty good company, aye?

The album will be released regionally on April 1, with a national release date set for July 10, 2006.

Luna Documentary

Frank points out that the trailer for Luna’s documentary about their final tour can now be viewed online. It seems to be more than just live footage, which is a good thing in my book. I remember some of the interviews they did for the last album and it seems like similar themes are discussed in the film. Namely, being an indie rock band does not make you rich.

Way back when, donewaiting.com San Francisco writer Craig Ness discussed how much he loved Luna. Read that here.

R.I.P. Nikki Sudden

From Secretly Canadian:

We’re incredibly sad to report that our friend NIKKI SUDDEN passed away Sunday, March 26, age 49, in New York City after performing the prior night at the Knitting Factory. He wrote hundreds of songs and made over 20 albums as a solo artist and with his bands SWELL MAPS, THE JACOBITES, THE LAST BANDITS and his band with ROWLAND S. HOWARD, among others. He was an inspiration to watch at work, working ceaselessly as a musician, writer and actor. Just prior to heading out for this last US tour, he completed his latest album “The Truth Doesn’t Matter” and was putting the finishing touches on his autobiography.

It was a great honor to work with such a legendary figure, and his warmth and generosity of spirit will not be forgotten. He was a good man in endless pursuit of his artistic dreams. We extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family, and rest easily knowing that he has joined his brother Epic Soundtracks, who passed away in 1997. We’re seeking solace in Nikki’s timeless records and we feel blessed to have known Nikki and to have his voice sing on.
