Billy Corgan talks baseball.

corgan_middle_ps.jpgBilly Corgan loves the Chicago Cubs. How could you not? I hate all sports and even I love the Cubs!

So in today’s Chicago Tribune he participated in a Q & A regarding his favorite team. This is not that odd considering Corgan is known for calling in to local radio stations or appearing on local television sports talk shows to discuss his beloved Cubbies. However the one question that caught my eye was in regards to the music played at Wrigley Field and Corgan’s thoughts on those song selections.

“How about playing songs by Chicago artists? Every city I go to plays songs by their local artists. The theme song for the Boston Red Sox is `Dirty Water’, a song by the ’60’s group The Standells about the River Charles (and other sundry goings-on). It is absolutely criminal how bad the music is that is played at Wrigley Field. Discounting myself from this idea, how about nine innings worth of Chicago blues, Cheap Trick, Styx, etc. Instead we get passe hits and out-of-touch classics. ” (full story)

I’m with him all the way. Well, except for the blues thing since I can’t stand most of the slick crap packaged as “Chicago” blues. However, how awesome would nine innings of “He’s A Whore” and “Dream Police” be? Yeah yeah!

Everybody's a freakin' rock snob!

This has been nagging at me for some time now and my feelings are incredibly mixed on the subject. On one hand I love the fact that so many bands are now being exposed to such an incredibly huge audience. On the other hand, you know, I worked a really long time to amass my music collection and attain the level of “rock snobbery” I’m at. Whatever. This article kind of helped sum up this quandary a bit. I’ve kind of gone over this a bit before and this adds another dimension since I am starting to get a little sick of everyone thinking they’re a freaking critic just because they’ve got a bunch o’ tunes on the ol’ iPod.

Meh, maybe you just shouldn’t mind me since I’m probably just being a jetlagged grumpy old man today…

INXS Rock Star vs. American Idol

I’ve often sat home at night, alone, wondering why the INXS show was able to get a large majority of top 40 songs while American Idol was forced into the cut bin catalog.

Luckily, New York Times has an answer. It basically boils down to musicians not wanting their songs massacred William Hung-style on Idol while the INXS camp was able to convince them that real, talented people would be singing the songs on their show.

So there you go.

Also, the show was tanking in the beginning of the season but it has slowly built a following. Personally, I think the whole show is a bit on the wonky side, but hey, I TiVo “The Price is Right.”

When That Pesky Opening Band Gets All the Press

When you go on tour and the opening band is generating mad monkey indie rock buzz, what’s a band to do? That’s what’s going on right now with the current tour of headliners The National with openers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the press the tour is getting and see what is being covered. Now, the National might have received reviews in these publications on a different tour, but I wanted to see how things were shaping up for Right Now.

Here’s just a few stops on the tour and some of the related press.

9/08: Northampton, MA
Valley Advocate‘s preview is mostly about the National, but this review of the show tells the story of the entire crowd leaving after CYHSY, while the National plays to a hand full of people.

9/10: Philadelphia, PA
The Philadelphia Weekly‘s show preview is all about the openers, with a small merciful mention to the National at the end.

9/19: Cleveland, OH
Cleveland Scene interviews CYHSY.

9/20: Columbus, OH
Columbus Alive interviews CYHSY.
