New Music Video Round-Up

Here’s a batch of new music videos that are actually pretty good:

Choir Rehearsal

fieryfurnaces.jpg

Rehearsing My Choir is the upcoming album from the Fiery Furnaces, one of the most loved and hated bands on the circuit today. I’m not gonna tell you where to get it early, but it has sprung a leak. And let me say one thing: it’s some fucked up shit.

Tracklist and a few tour dates here.

Update on Small Labels Joining RIAA

Since we wrote about some smaller labels joining the RIAA last week, it looks like things have been cleared up. Due to random deals with several of the large distribution companies, most of these labels did show up on the RIAA list but in fact are not affiliated. They can’t seem to get off the list even after countless attempts. Catbirdseat has some info, and we also got this note in the comments section of the site from Absolutely Kosher:

Well, we’ve been asked about this half a dozen times in the last two weeks since Catbirdseat posted about it. Here’s the deal. We signed a deal with Fontana distribution early this year (February) which, as you may know, is owned by Universal. They have some sort of agreement in place where they report sales and the like to the RIAA. Without an exclusive contract with a distributor, our records (particularly those by our younger “developing” bands) had been brutally under-distributed and we were in need of a change. We tried to have any involvement with the RIAA removed from the contract, but it wasn’t a negotiable point and I wasn’t prepared to throw our whole distribution deal out the window over this. Suffice to say, we’ve had no communication with the RIAA directly, we won’t be showing up at any meetings and they can bite my ass. We’re listed on their site under “Distributed Labels of Reporting Companies” and that’s pretty much what we are – a distributed label of a reporting company.

Do They Know It’s Hallowe’en?

You Ain’t No Picasso turned me on to a new indie rock all-star jam song, “Do They Know It’s Hallowe’en?”, an upcoming charity single for UNICEF.

You can listen to the song here. It’s pretty awesome-licious.

Bands performing in the single include the Arcade Fire, Smoosh, David Cross, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, Feist, Rilo Kiley, Postal Service, Elvira, Peaches, Sonic Youth and many, many more.

New DJ Riko Super Mix

Our good friend DJ Riko has a great new mix for your downloading pleasure. Here’s the details from the man himself:

Here?s a new mix that?s a lil different than what I usually do. I call it Personal Stash because the tunes are mostly old favorites of mine. It?s not for everyone, but I love it.

PLEASE NOTE: This mix is not suitable for children and probably isn?t work safe. It contains VERY BAD language ?- and I do mean very, very bad ?- though it?s mostly contained to one song. It also has songs featuring commentary about whether children born to interracial couples are more susceptible to crack attacks. And songs with speculation as to whether Pablo Picasso was ever called an asshole. And songs with statements that seem to condone or promote drug use. And songs with depictions of God as having something of an attitude. And songs featuring a tuba, flute and/or french horn section.

DJ Riko – Personal Stash (clicky clicky) (78MB, 58 minutes, 192 kbps)

Tracklist:
Mercury Rev ? Something For Joey
My Bloody Valentine ? Emptiness Inside
Big Stick ? Crack Attack
Flash and the Pan ? Midnight Man
MC 900 Foot Jesus ? Born With Monkey Asses
William Shatner ? Together
Adam Ant ? Here Comes the Grump
Great Lakes ? Virgil
jennyanykind ? You Better Get Right With God
Yo La Tengo ? Drug Test
Magnetic Fields ? Take Ecstasy With Me (Susan Anway vocals)
Beach Boys ? Feel Flows
Bostich ? Polaris
Burning Sensations ? Pablo Picasso

So You Own An Independent Music Store

This article might be of interest to you. It talks about how small book stores can compete better against the large chains, but if you substitute the word “book” with the word “music” you’ll have some ideas that work just as well in the audio world.
