Catbirdseat pointed out a few new and interesting labels that have joined the RIAA recently, including Absolutely Kosher, Spinart, Lookout!, Hush and New West.

This is one of my favorite sites to get a nice snapshot of what people are saying about albums.

Media company CNET Networks Inc. on Monday said it has acquired Metacritic Inc. and its entertainment review Web site for an undisclosed amount … Metacritic.com — visited by nearly 170,000 unique visitors per month — helps consumers make informed decisions about how to spend their entertainment dollars and time.

The site provides summaries of what critics are saying about the latest films, videos, music, games and books, and scores each into an overall grade, so users can gauge the critical consensus at a glance. (full story)

Dispatches from the New York City Area

I’m in NJ for the week taking care of some family business. Got here Saturday morning.

On Saturday I saw a bunch of Japanese bands @ the Knitting Factory. Some were amazing, some were bad, I’ll be damned if I know the names of any of them. I really should look it up.

Last night, while most people were rocking to MIA in Central Park, I went to a Polka Concert in my hometown of Clifton, NJ where the average age was 65. HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW?

Sadly, Brooklyn Vegan was not at the show taking pix.

R.I.P. Ibrahim Ferrer

Ibrahim Ferrer, the Cuban vocalist who emerged from obscurity to become a breakout star with the Buena Vista Social Club, died Saturday in Havana. He was 78. (full story)

Promise Ring to Reunite

Unfortunately, it’s for one-night only. The band will be one of many taking part in the Flower Booking 15 year anniversary shows taking place in November at the Metro in Chicago. Jimmy Eat World, Local H and other scheduled to appear.

New Sigur Ros Has Leaked

Okay folks, the new Sigur Ros is out there for all of you who like to preview before purchasing.

This short review by Paul has made me so excited about the album I can’t even handle it.
