New John Vanderslice MP3

John Vanderslice‘s new album, Pixel Revolt, comes out in August, but he’s posted up an mp3 for you to download: “Trance Manual”.

Pixel Revolt, by the way, is my favorite album title of 2005 so far.

Mike Doughty Has a Blog

Really, he does. I laughed at it today when I learned that he bought his own album on iTunes.

OH Columbus is Dead! Long Live Team Columbus

I’ve changed the format of my Columbus OH blog, OH Columbus! It’s now called Team Columbus and we have a bunch of people writing for it. Details here.

Pretty big deal for me to give up total control, but I can’t be a micromanager for everything DW-related.

American Association of Independent Music

In what appears to be another example of The Long Tail in action, C|Net is reporting the formation of the American Association of Independent Music—

Betting that collective action will help give them more market power, a group of 125 independent record labels initiated a new trade group Monday night aimed at giving them more parity with the four major music labels.

Dubbed the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), the trade group’s membership and specific goals remain somewhat diffuse. But leaders–including top executives at some of the biggest independents in the country–say they’re hoping to help give indie businesses the power their collective market share deserves as the music business is transformed by digital technologies.

Emo Boy

Slave Labor Graphics brings the world Emo Boy, a new comic by Steve Edmond.

From the press release:

Emo kids everywhere will weep with joy upon hearing of the release of SLG’s new comic book series Emo Boy by Steve Emond. Emo Boy, an outsider who is constantly physically and mentally bulllied, uses his super-human sensitivity to sabotage his own happiness and his unpredictable emo powers to confound his enemies. But they should be warned: There lies treachery in Emo Boy. Sure, Emo Boy is, as Emond puts it, “about a character and a story and high school and being alienated and alienating yourself, about silly stories and first loves (and a lack thereof), and finding yourself and growing up and all that good stuff,” but it’s also about a wicked case of schadenfreude.

Clicking the Emo Boy link above will give you a 9 page preview. Sounds funny.

Donewaiting.com Review: New Flaming Lips Documentary

Donewaiting.com Chicago writer Tankboy files a rather excellent review of the new Flaming Lips documentary just released on DVD. A highlight:

The only time I?ve ever openly wept at a concert was at a Flaming Lips show. I wasn?t high or drunk or dosed or anything like that. It wasn?t even the first or third or ninth time I?d seen the band. For some reason, though, the particular rendition of ?Lightning Strikes The Postman? they performed in Chicago when opening for (and later backing) Beck just got to me. The sirens, the flashing lights, the megaphone, the grown-up hopping around dressed like incredibly huge fluffy bunnies; it all came together and slammed into me with an emotional force I was completely unprepared for. New York Times Slams Coldplay

Awhile back I was saying to a friend that I was surprised that the New York Times music section rarely ran any negative articles about bands. Well, that certainly changed today:

And the lyrics can make me wish I didn’t understand English. Coldplay’s countless fans seem to take comfort when Mr. Martin sings lines like, “Is there anybody out there who / Is lost and hurt and lonely too,” while a strummed acoustic guitar telegraphs his aching sincerity. Me, I hear a passive-aggressive blowhard, immoderately proud as he flaunts humility. “I feel low,” he announces in the chorus of “Low,” belied by the peak of a crescendo that couldn’t be more triumphant about it.(full story)

A far cry from their White Stripes love of last week.
