Which Music Service Is Selling Your Personal Data?

The story begins at Boing Boing, where Chris Hoofnagle of EPIC notes some data for sale here. Further investigation/searching has led to the finger being tentatively pointed in the direction of eMusic, though they have denied it. The digging has also uncovered this data set for sale as well.

2 Notes Regarding the Donewaiting.com Decemberists Columbus OH Concert

1. If you’re looking to buy tickets at the door, you might want to consider buying advances. Little Brother’s has maybe 10 left, and Ticketmaster has SOME too. But not many.

2. Due to illness, Willy Mason has been forced to cancel off the entire tour. Rebecca Gates (of the Spinanes) will be his replacement.

Dare we say ‘niche’?

Hot on the footsteps of her appearance at ATP, Yoko Ono is one of the acts scheduled to appear at this year’s Meltdown Festival, curated by Patti Smith.

“The festival will be held in June at the South Bank Centre in central London.

There are big ideas on show, glimpses of her mind. Smith will introduce a homage to Bertolt Brecht as well as using the poetry of William Blake as a theme. Her interpretation of his Songs of Innocence will showcase protest songs – with Sinead O’Connor performing – while Songs of Experience, which will draw on the work of Hendrix and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, will end the festival. Smith will mark the 30th anniversary of her debut album Horses by performing it in its entirety.”

I smell a mash-up

Did you know that “Oops! I did it again” was a Louie Armstrong cover originally recorded in 1932? Check out the story and an MP3 of the original song.

UPDATE: I got fooled on this one. It’s a hoax.

New New Pornographers

The band’s third record Twin Cinema is scheduled for release on Matador Records on August 23rd, 2005. Curious parties should click here to view the cover art and download the mp3 of the album’s title track.

The First All-Podcast Station

Infinity Broadcasting is converting it’s KYCY 1550 AM station in San Francisco to a (supposedly) listener-submitted Podcast format. Following the usual corporate media model, one suspects it’s only a matter of time before these allegedly grassroots broadcasts bring creative insights into the fascinating life work of Hillary Duff and Hoobastank. We’ll hold out hope, though.

SummerStage Tickets To Go On Sale

The 2005 benefits concerts for Central Park?s SummerStage have been announced. The ticket prices are kind of steep (for my pockets, at least), but these great shows help to support the many free concerts held at SummerStage throughout the season. It?s a really great way to spend a New York City afternoon.

I saw Sonic Youth perform one of the free shows; ah, what a beautiful day that was.

You can find info on the shows, which will include performances by David Byrne, Elvis Costello, Dinosaur Jr., and more, here.

Decemberists Benefit Auction

Remember how the Decemberists had all their gear stolen by meth addicts way back when? Well, even after recovering some of the instruments in meth house raids, they’re still short about 20 large.

TIME FOR A YARD SALE!

The band is running a benefit auction via ebay, so here’s your chance to help out as well as take home some seriously cool swag. That includes custom made badges from the “16 Military Wives” video, pictures from the Picaresque photo sessions, concert posters and even a tamarack from the “Eli the Barrow Boy” shoot. The biggest ticket item is a custom poster of “The Infanta” by Craig Thompson of “Blankets” and “Goodbye Chunky Rice” fame. $800!

Universal sued for “racketeering”

From Reuters:

Two independent music promoters have sued Universal Music Group for $100 million, claiming the record company forced them to submit false invoices so Universal could recoup promotional costs from artists such as rapper Nelly.

Billy Corgan bashes Rainbo Club, public sex.

In case you didn’t know, Billy Corgan is publishing his autobiography in installments over on his personal web-site. Greg Kot interviewed him in yesterday’s Chicago Tribune and got this particularly tasty quote out of the ex-Pumpkin in regards to the break-up of Zwan:

The music wasn’t the big problem, it was more their attitude: `Why do we have to practice? I’d rather be hanging out at the Rainbo.’ Lifestyle stuff. And then you get into what I would call cataclysmic behavioral stuff. Sex acts between band members in public. People carrying drugs across borders. Pajo sleeping with the producer’s girlfriend while we were making the record. I just tried to do what I’ve always done, which is to patch it up and roll it out. You go into a denial state. I got snookered in by really bad people. It’s embarrassing to me. But it wised me up to why I play, and who I love, and it made me appreciate my old band even more. (full story)

Nice.
