donewaiting/Signal: Growth

Drastic times call for drastic measures.

We’re happy to report that Jawbreaker, known to many in the donewaiting.com forum, is now contributing to our Signal to Noise columm.

There’s so much to cover in the world of technology and legal sectors of music, we needed reinforcements.

donewaiting/Los Angeles: Live REM Review

Han, our West Coast Big, writes up a rather pleasant review of the Wilco and REM show that recently hit Los Angeles.

The band looked downright peppy, bouncing around with abandon, none more so than Michael Stipe. Long gone is the shy mumbler of the early days and the melodramtic poses of the Green and Monster tours. Instead, Stipe seems mostly himself, comfortable in his own skin at last. While he still has a set of rehearsed moves, his awkward physicality keeps it from looking choreographed and his self-deprecating stage banter is more anecdotal and conversational than ever. Instead of a ringmaster or master showman, he acts more like the concerned host of a party of 15,000 friends. (full review)

If you’d like to compare and contrast, you can read our review of REM in England here, in England Made Me.

donewaiting/Durst: The Quote Game

We’d love for you to play The Quote Game, the new sensation that’s taking the internet by storm.

Charlesworth didn’t go see Ted Leo on Saturday “because he wasn’t going to go on until 11:30pm.” I just don’t know what to say.

donewaiting/England: Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol has a new album out, and our man across the ocean, Steve Miller, knocks out a bit regarding an earlier release by the band:

Snow Patrol?s 2001 album, When It?s All Over We Still Have To Clear Up was full of bitterness, self-loathing and bewilderment as Gary Lightbody dumped his traumatic personal life across all twelve tracks. Spiky, angry and quite outstanding, this is surely one of the ultimate breakup albums and, reeling as I was at the time from a similar situation, it became my soundtrack to the first half of that year, along with Shinkansen?s Field Mice compilation. donewaiting/Indianapolis: 911 Is A Joke

Miss Danica Johnson, our Indianapolis correspondent, provides us with additional insight into the rock kids vs. cops situation that is going on. Read about it here.

Dear Cops: Please stop ticketing kids at all ages shows for no good reason. Thanks, donewating.com.

Frank Reviews My Morning Jacket/Sleepy Jackson Concert

Sure wish this tour was coming through my town. Ah well. At least others can enjoy.

Tonight is the big Cursive/Blood Brothers/Eastern Youth show so all in the world is not bad.

The Beatles vs. Apple, continued

The story today:

The Beatles’ record company Apple Corps Ltd. has sued Apple Computer Inc., claiming the computer maker’s iTunes products violate a 1991 agreement that the Beatles said meant the Silicon Valley computer maker would stay out of the music business.

When Steve Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1977, he is said to have chosen the name in part as a tribute to the Beatles. The 1991 deal dealt with the future use of the name “Apple” and of both companies’ well-known logos. (full story)

Steve Jobs named the Apple Computer Company after the Apple Records Label, home of the Beatles, back in the day as sort of a tribute. He had to sign some agreements saying that they would never get into the music business so that the two companies would never be confused.

The Beatles have sued them once and got a lot of money from them. It could happen again.

My only problem is that at this point in time, could anyone really confuse the two companies? In fact, do many people under the age of 30 even know that the Beatles are on the “Apple Records” label. Doubtful.

Improve The Sound Of CD With Yogurt

That’s all I’m saying.

Hi Duffy, This Is Andrew WK Calling

Remember when we told you that Andrew W.K. was going to be calling 1,000 fans to thank them for buying his album? Well, it’s begun. On top of that, they’ve recorded the conversations and can be listened to here.

I am registered. I hope I am one of the thousand.

Speaking of The Wolf, here’s a bit of a review that I rather enjoyed:

It would be tough for Andrew W.K. to store up more goodwill than he already has: He’s helped make gleeful rock music trendy, his marathon autograph sessions have become the stuff of folk legend, and, most impressively of all, his music makes listeners feel 14 again?in a good way. Short of saving Christmas, and don’t think he wouldn’t try, W.K. couldn’t do much more to win people over. (full story)

Wilco on Leno: The MP3

Bling bling.

[Side note: Wilco’s appearance on the show is better late than never, I suppose.]
