donewaiting/Houston: Never Stop Listening
DW Houston writer David A. Cobb poses the question, “Does getting married mean you must stop listening to new music?”
Sure, maybe getting married and having a child means you can’t go out and see bands as often. And you shouldn’t. You should be at home raising your kid. But it doesn’t mean you ignore every show that comes to town, or that you stop buying CDs or even listening to music altogether because all you hear at home is Elmo’s maniacal laugh and the sounds of another soiled diaper.
Isn’t that more of a reason to stay into music? (full article)
Make with the clicky and then discuss here. It might be my favorite thing David has written for us this year, and that’s saying a lot.

SXSW Keynote Speaker Announced. Yippee!
Taken from a SXSW press release:
“South By Southwest (SXSW) is pleased to announce the keynote speaker for the 2004 Music Conference, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, president & CEO of Arista Records. The keynote conversation, to be conducted by Craig Marks, editor of Blender Magazine, kicks off three days of panels and workshops on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at the Austin Convention Center.
Reid’s tenure at Arista has seen the successes of Outkast, Pink, Dido, Neptunes, Usher, Avril Lavigne and more. In a business atmosphere of consolidation and retreat, Reid has bucked the odds and established Arista as a key player in a changing label landscape.”
A friend of mine had to do a performance in some board room for L.A. and she said it was one of the scariest things she’s ever had to do.

Rolling Stone Interviews Steve Jobs
Regarding what record labels need to do to save themselves:
The remedy is to stop paying advances. The remedy is to go to a gross-revenues deal and tell an artist, “We’ll give you twenty cents on every dollar we get, but we’re not gonna give you an advance. The accounting will be simple: We’re gonna pay you not on profits — we’re gonna pay you off revenues. It’s very simple: The more successful you are, the more you’ll earn. But if you’re not successful, you will not earn a dime. We’ll go ahead and risk some marketing money on you. But if you’re not successful, you’ll make no money. If you are, you’ll make a lot more money.” That’s the way out. That’s the way the rest of the world works. (full interview)
