It’s not Coachella, But I Take What I Can Get

Tomorrow in Columbus OH we’ve got a pretty good concert put on by local independent radio station CD 101. Bands performing are: Phantom Planet, The Thrills, Stellastarr, The Killers, Steriogram and donewaiting.com alumni Manda and the Marbles.

All for $5 @ Promowest.

Today Is Not Good Friday, It’s Goth Friday

  • Download: New PJ Harvey Song

Our man Han found a link to a new PJ Harvey song in WMA format: Click to listen.

I agreed with Han when he said to me (over AIM): “The song doesn’t blow me away, but it’s at least in the style that I want to hear PJ Harvey songs in.”

    Thurston Moore on Kurt Cobain

Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore wrote an OpEd piece in the New York Times about Kurt Cobain. This is my absolute favorite quote:

You wouldn’t know it now by looking at MTV, with its scorn-metal buffoons and Disney-damaged pop idols, but the underground scene Kurt came from is more creative and exciting than it’s ever been. From radical pop to sensorial noise-action to the subterranean forays in drone-folk-psyche-improv, all the music Kurt adored is very much alive and being played by amazing artists he didn’t live to see, artists who recognize Kurt as a significant and honorable muse. • Conor “Bright Eyes”Oberst Creates New Record Label

The good news: all the releases will be available for free download on the website. The bad news: They use the word “dosh.” What the…?

Team Love plans to make music available in free download form on the label’s Web site the same day albums are released in stores. “We want you to take all the time you need before deciding whether or not to spend your dosh,” reads a note on the site. “Call it the Team Love Library.” (full story)

Tilly & the Wall and Willy Mason are the first releases.

I’m not up on my Saddle Creek history, but isn’t Oberst the owner of that label too? Why create a second imprint? And while I’m at it, DUDES, let’s lose the cool cursive font and give me some text to read. My eyes are hurting.

I’ll have a full review of Monday’s brilliant Twilight Singer’s show soon, but in the meantime please enjoy some photos from the concert. Here’s a sample:

Spoon’s Britt Daniel Goes on Mini-Tour

Britt Daniel of Spoon heads off in a van and does some solo shows. If it’s anything like his SXSW performance, you’ll probably get some old and new Spoon love.

Damn you, Craig Ness, for being able to see him in San Francisco. And while we’re at it, F you too, Han.

    The shows:

Apr 17- Los Angeles, CA- Spaceland
Apr 19- San Francisco, CA- Hotel Utah

Listen to Wilco’s “A Ghost is Born” Legally

I’ve been checking their site every day waiting for this: Quicktime stream of the new album can be heard here.

Check it out, and then discuss it with us in our message board.

At first listen, this stream seems to sound a little different than the downloads previously discussed.

    April 10th @ Uncle Joe’s, Jersey City

    LOOKING FOR BANDS

Saturday, April 10th, Uncle Joe’s (Jersey City, NJ): The powerful and sexy Spitting Cobras will be playing.

Due to some silly circumstances, we have no other bands. If interested in filling the bill, please contact me right away.

    Thank you.

    Down with Lucero

I probably listened to Lucero‘s latest album, “That Much Further West” about ten times yesterday. There’s a quote on the top of their website from Rolling Stone that says, “The country album the Replacements never made” and that about sums it up. Great whiskey soaked rock songs to warm you up during these cold Ohio nights.

A small pressing of the album came with a bonus disc of 12 demos, live and alternative versions of the songs that made the full length proper, and that disc is as good (if not better) than the real deal.

Here’s an MP3 from the album: “Tears Don’t Matter Much”. On their website you can find a bunch of live MP3s, too.
